So I replaced my 740QM with a 940XM yesterday, and after reassembly, my laptop will not boot at all. I put the battery + power cable in and I dont get any lights or anything. The only exception to this is if I put my battery in, then put my AC cable in. The alienhead on my cover, and my media bar light up and keep changing colors. But if I hit the power button on the media bar, they go dark again.

Ive tore it down 2 more times since then to check for loose screws/loose cables etc. But I haven't been able to find anything out of place.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Did you seat the display cable properly? Remember to tighten the flat head screw on the cpu socket? Both of those will give you the problem you have.

My guess is you forgot to tighten the socket. Turn the screw clockwise. Be sure to take the heatsink off before tightening it.

Does it boot if you put back the 740QM?
Your new cpu could be defective

if you put your 740qm back in, will it boot up? if so you may have get a bad cpu. How did you install the 940xm? Anyway recheck your connections also.

EDIT: what DR650 told you. I've installed my 920 few days ago, on one of the repaste attempt i though everything was connected and upon boot up just black screen and caps look blinking... scared the crap out of me.. it was just the LCD cable not properly seated

If tried putting my old 740QM back in, with the same result. Being as this is my first attempt at tear down/cpu replacement, I think it's just something I'm overlooking. I'll tear it down and make sure I have the socket tightened (before I put the heat sink back on) and make sure my display cable is properly attached.

The blue ribbon on the display cable is suppose to be pressed forward on the display cable correct? That's the lock position right?

Yeah, I'm not sure what is wrong. I put my 940xm in, tightened the socket, put heat sink back. Then I checked all the cables. I checked my video cable, it's securely on there, I'm just not sure the correct position for the blue ribbon lock thing to be in. All my other ribbon cables look good on my media bar/touch pad etc.

Could it be a problem with the screws? I've heard that the screws are used for grounding purposes, and it wont power on without the right screws in the right places.

    I'm just so confused.

    Just a little update.

I've noticed my alienhead power button on my media bar blinks very faintly every time I plug in my AC power cable.

Its your cpu. Im 95% sure you forgot to tighten that screw. I think the alien flash is normal. If you tear down again, update us further

    DR65, You're the man.

Turns out it was my CPU, but it wasn't the screw.

Since you were so convinced it was my CPU, I decided to take a look at the CPU itself. Upon glancing at the bottom of the processor, I noticed one of the prongs was bent out of place. Took a little flathead, bent it back into place.

Put everything back together, and booted up perfectly!

    Thanks everyone for the help!

Awesome. Glad you got it working.g. Enjoy the cpu. Its a beast. Didn't even think about a bent pin. Hopefully it wasn't too bent.
