If you just installed the OS, there are a slew of updates to come in the next few hours. One of those updates will likely be a security update that fixes your problem.

Right. Dell doesn't automatically install anything. Microsoft will update your installation for you though.

reinstalling windows on an M17x is long... FIRST - PLEAS make sure you read ALL steps on reinstalling alienware programs and drivers, or you WILL damage your computer!

there is a list of things you have to install in a order. if the order is not followed, you risk damage from video cards, to the main board.

with that out of the way, if your window update is not working, I would think you have not activated it yet. if you have activated it, (or cracked it), it seems like it did not work. windows 7 dose have activations problems, and a reformat can often fix it.

I don't think any damage will occur. I've installed my drivers in all kinds of different orders and never had any problems. In theory, you would install the chipset driver first, followed by the GPU driver. After that I don't think it matters much.

Highly unlikely from a fresh OS install. The generic OS driver coding must have some sort of direct access to the hardware via software (of course) to blow things up. This is highly unlikely but possible!

I would install in this order...

    1. Ethernet/wireless! for updates
    2. chipset drivers
    3. video drivers

And the rest is up to you hehe

What damage you talking about? No need to put needless input to a noob, and there is no need for windows activation if fresh installed off the OS DVD that came from Alienware. Try not to misinform fellow users if you don't know what you are talking about.

As for fresh install, just make sure you download all the drivers from Dell, install it, and goto device manager and make sure you don't have any unknown devices. If you do have unknown devices, you probably didn't install all the drivers for the system.

As already mentioned, Windows does not need to be activated if you reinstall it using a Dell-provided disc and on a Dell machine. Dell have an agreement with Microsoft over this.

You're not going to damage your computer by not reinstalling some programs or drivers. The programs provided only provide additional functionality such as changing the lighting. The drivers merely allow the hardware to function properly. If you wanted to, you could get away without installing any drivers whatsoever, but you can't really complain when the more advanced components of the system don't work.

The only way hardware damage would happen is if the in-built OS drivers had massive flaws in them... and if they did, then they'd fry the hardware before you could even install new ones anyway. It's also extremely unlikely because the generic drivers are far less complex and don't really interface with the hardware at a deep level. Compare a standard VGA driver that to say a Nvidia driver which will work at a much deeper level.

Learning all this stuff is complicated enough without misinformation being spread.

Can you outline what you are doing from scratch to give us a better idea. Are you first using a legal copy of Windows, if not using the restore CD? I'm just asking in case, considering there are many versions of Windows 7 out there that have been modified. This shouldn't be complicated if you start off as many have suggested already.

well I reinstalled win 7 from the recovery cd that comes with the computer(original) then I used the other cd that comes with all the drivers and installed each one, at the end I went to dell website and downloaded the latest updates ( this is the moment when I find out that it's telling me that the dell website is not secure) and other websites that I always visit are saying the same thing. I went to win updates to see if there was something to download to fix that and it can't connect to dowload any updates.
