When I received my replacement it needed a 1080p lcd so they had a tech come out and he took apart the entire laptop and cover in order to change the lcd.

I'm fairly certain that it didn't need to be that extensive looking over the tech manual but who knows. He was also the only tech I've ever seen who used a anti static mat and wristband @ my house.

I know when he was taking apart the cover there were a few moments I was sure the entire thing was gonna shatter everywhere.

    End of mystery.
This morning has been the technician in my home, we removed the lid, and could not turn on the LED that is not directly mounted.
I can see the hole and the media where it should be mounted, but no.

The technician sent a completely different piece and could not do anything.

AW support now tell me that this piece has no reference because not it is a replacement part , and recommend to return the equipment.

    Sorry, my bad english

It turns out that when we remove the cover we find that the hole for the AlienHead LED is empty. It isn´t factory assembled.
    Why? I don´t know...

Now Dell tells me that this piece has no reference number, it is not part a replacement.
Therefore, the AW support I recommend return

This is odd because both my current system and the one I had to return acted the like the Screen back light controlled it. So now were hearing that theirs actually a slot for an LED back there? What the heck...

Both me and my friends alienware have the head illuminated only when the screen is on. Maybe it's a new design to save some penny?

We both ordered our system one day apart about 2 month ago, mine is the m17x and his the m14x

I do not think a new design.
Rather I think it could be that not have stock that piece and send it the same without her.
But I tell you must have an LED, in the first place because it has its specific hole, its connector specific empty, and because, as I said, I myself have had two and both had LED.

The function of this LED is a warning that the laptop is on.
An LED turns off when lowering the lid does not make any sense or logic.

He seems serious on the part of Dell computers send incomplete,.
The M17xR3 is designed to have the AlienHead LED fixed(not some and not others)

Perhaps during assembly the part was simply omitted. Manufacturing mistakes happen, doesn't necessarily mean it was of malicious intent.

Are you required to return the entire machine? Is it being sent to depot? Are you getting a replacement/refund?

An assembly error is possible, yes, but you saw how many people if I had not brought it up, on today would not have even noticed?

The problem is that people may think that this is normal if you can not compare with other M17xR3
AlienHead really can give a false sense of being enlightened, but only because the screen transparent.

Only in this post: Mikeypinero, Villosa, vads24, Riftwire, Gulmat and her friends
All affected without LED on their computers.

I do not think an oversight or something casual.

Whether or not an important piece, the truth is that the team we have sent incomplete.

It would be very interesting that someone with a native English conducted a survey to find out how many users there are, unknowingly, are affected.

    ^^
This is what i was trying to say all along.
There are users that received the lid with nothing but the screen backlight to light the alienhead and others who claimed that there is a PCB behind their alienhead but only with WHITE LEDs.

What i was trying to find out was:
Does the board with white LEDs come with a certain type of monitor or Dell asked for a redesign of the lid adding the PCB so the alien head light will be independent from the screen state.

All my lights turn off when I shut the lid. When I set my display to sleep, the alien head stays on. When I change the brightness, it does not effect the alien head.

I think it's just a setting somewhere on mine. It was received the first week of August, if that matters.
