    Problems formatting old RAID-0 HDD

Well I removed both of my old 500GB HDDs from my R2 and put in Disk0 the Vertex 3 SSD and and in Disk1 the 500GB that was previously in Disk0 in RAID0. The other 500GB that used to be in Disk1 had a failure and I had to remove it, that's why I upgraded to SSD (hopefully it doesn't die on me).

Now I tried to Initialize the HDD to format it with MBR but it keeps saying no file found, what is the meaning of this? Also it doesn't report it as a 500GB but as the old RAID-0 capacity of 932GB, how come it shows that?

Sorry but this is the first time I come across such a problem. Mind you that when I was still using the HDDs in RAID-0 the error message showed up on BIOS screen Disk1 having a reading error but windows was boot-able and no problems except in C++ run time. Windows didn't crash and I was able to play games like Mass effect 3 without crashing or anything, so is it possible that my Disk1 HDD was still in good condition?

I'm not sure how to break a RAID array but try formatting the 500GB HDD in an external drive bay and see if it that works.

edit: Actually, I'd try going into Disk Management and deleting the volume on the HDD then formatting. That should get rid of the RAID metadata. If not, then try the external bay.

I think I will try an external bay method. I used the windows Disc to try to format it, it did it but once in windows looks like nothing changed.

Did you delete the volume before formatting?

I think you might need to delete the volume to break the RAID array since the RAID metadata is there. I'll look into it to see if that's the case.

Guys, I'm still stuck with this HDD, when I load into WIN7 install disk I see it as a 500GB HDD but it shows that it is in HDD0 and not in HDD1 which is the opposite really. I deleted the volume then I hit new, format it then deleted the volume again, hit new decreased 1mb just to be sure, format then back to windows.

It STILL shows up as a 952GB HDD and won't format, it says missing file. When it gets Initialized it shows in HDD1 (which is correct).

Do I have to use a special program to break this OEM RAID-0 array?

I downloaded WD diagnostics tools and tried to write zeros to the HDD, it skips lots and finishes in 3 seconds flat, HDD seems IMO to be dead, I trash them both.

That's odd indeed. That means the RAID array metadata's not getting erased? I wish I could be of more help but I have very limited experience with RAID. Maybe if you switch your SATA operation to AHCI in the BIOS?

could try accessing the drive with something like GParted

removing the partitions and starting fresh may fix it.

It's in AHCI already since I made a fresh install on my new SSD without the old drives installed then proceeded to install both of them, both have those Issues. I haven't tried GParted yet, I shall give it a try. Thanks xeroxide.
