So late december i bought my wife a M17x, 2.4ghz, 4gb, 250 hd, dvdrw, 900p, gtx260. no bluetooth or bluray.

It was a decent lappy until i started noticing the studder which became known as dpc latency. I worked with dell 4 or 5 times until they decided to offer me an exchange.

I worked with a TS supervisor who promised me what the tech recommended, an R2. She even sent me specs of what i would get.

Yesterday a box arrived, my wife accepted it and put it in my office.

I opened it last night after getting home from work.

    I found .....surprise...an R1

    q9000, 4gb, 900p, dvdrw, bluetooth, gtx280m-sli, 250hd.

ok, yes its better than what i had, though the q9000 doesnt seem as strong.

whats your opinions, should i make a stink that its not the R2 i was promised or be happy that its better. I'm currently testing it to see if the dpc issue affects this unit.

in addition to that the battery wont charge, i tried it in her old system and the replacement.

Look at the bright side, now you have an upgraded lappy and when you request the proper replacement (R2) they might give you the similar/better specs than your current ones ;)
So you might end-up with a dual 5870, RGB LED and maybe even i7-820QM.

By promised do you mean spoken, or e-mail/text? If it was only over the phone then it's a losing battle unfortunately. If you have a copy of an e-mail or order, then by all fights for your right to party- i mean get a better replacement!

Email from TS supervisor who was handling my exchange, the original order was cancelled so i emailed her and this was her reply. So Yes, i have the email promising me an R2.

    Dear Mr. X,

First and foremost let me apologize for the delay.

I actually canceled the order, because I actually preferred to check the configuration with you, in case you have some concerns, and also in case there is something you may want to change, because even tough we can not upgrade the components, we can change some things like the color of the case. This is the revision 2 of the m17x:

the list of items was here but its a pic so it didnt paste.

    i5 520, 900p, 5870, 250hd. etc

Please let me know if I should proceed to send you the DPS #.

Thats a pretty crazy situation, if it were me i would definately fight to get the right system. Offering you a system then sending you something different alltogether isn't right.

That's a decent replacement and still, much better than your old system. You can try and push it (at least to get the RGB LED), but it's highly unlikely that they will do it.
    Worth a try anyway.

Yes absolutely worth a try. It may take another month to get a replacement but after that you won't have any regrets for years to come ;) I had an M15x that malfunctioned and was issued a replacement and I paid a little extra to upgrade to the M17x and I'm happier with it. RGB display is awesome if you can get it, the colours are beautiful

So it took 4 phone calls today to get an answer on this issue.

Alienware TS finally contacted the TS supervisor who made the promise of the R2.

She claims sending an R1 was a mistake. She's suppose to process an R2 with the most basic config.

so what would you pick if you had the choice?

    R1 q9000(2.4ghz oc quad core), GTX280 sli, 250gb, bluetooth, 900p, dvdrw

    or

    R2 I5-520 (2.4ghz, dual core with HT), single 5870, 250gb, 900p, dvdrw, no bluetooth,

i hate to say i'm leaning towards the R1 but i havent done any research as to whether the i5 is better than the q9000. Also sli 280's vs single 5870...

I would push for the CF 5870 and the RGB LED screen

if not for anything other than the frustraition of this whole ordeal

Tell them that given the time wasted on the entire ordeal, you feel it would be fair if Dell would at least upgrade the R2 to an RGB LED display. If you can swing that much, a single 5870 with i5 + rgb led is a fair deal.

NO way would i take that I5-520, i would demand a i7 920QM at minimum i would take the 820. you can't go from quad core to garbage dual core. and the 280's SLI should get you the 5870's Crossfire x. everything else can be teh same. down to the LCD If you push your luck because of the hastle they might upgrade your screen to the RGBLED. but even then. Demand the 920QM because it seems like i joke to get teh i5-520 to replace a q9000 Quad core OC edition CPU. I went from a Studio XPS 1645 to my current M17x just due to hastles like this.

I think i might have gotten ahead of myself. ANywho. the 920 might be much considering your original system. (i was going off the newer R1)

Even still Go for the i7-620M The best dual core processor
5870's crossfire, the 4870's are obsoleted and not worth knowing the 5870's are around. Push for the RGBLED like everyone else has said. And keep everything else the same.

If your feeling truly adventurous go with the recommendation I gave you before and base it off the new system they sent you. You got TOP of the line R1 there basically. so why not a similarly specc'd out R2.
