My m17x (space black) is currently in the production stage, and I'd like to get something like a zagg invisible shield for it to put on before using the computer (I'm kind of a scratch/fingerprint freak). On zagg's site they only have a shield for the area-51 m17x which I believe will not fit the r2 correctly (maybe I'm wrong). Anyway, it only covers the back and the palm rests, but I want something for the screen too. Is there anything that can help me stay sane and not have to carry around MF cloths everywhere?

This may not sound practical, but I just thought of this. Look into some protective coating sprays (i.e. teflon).. There maybe a spray out there that would both protect the backing and make it fingerpring resistant. I'm sure there's something out there. If you like the idea and have some extra cash, buy an extra backing and test it on there. I may try it myself.. May have a new idea for Alienware... Lunar Silver, Space Black or Nebula Red w/ Teflon Coating...(Add $200)

I think an aluminum outer shell that you could attach would protect it, oh wait....

I think everyone here should head to Skinit.Com, Zagg.com, InvisibleDefenders.Com (& any other sites that I can't think of at this late hour) to request the M11x, M15x, M17x & M17x-R2 (although I do not see a difference in the outer dimensions of my R1 vs. R2) be added to their lists. Even if you do not plan on getting a skin for your M1 ?x, you are helping your community have more options for customizing their systems.
Invisible Defenders - device request for M17x (they already have the M11x & M15x)
Zagg - device request for M17x "not Area-51" & M15x "new design" (they already have the M11x)
Skinit has an option for the M17x, but not the M11x or M15x, plus the graphics are not displayed on an M17x, so we can not see how it will look, in relation to the alien head, before purchase. I was unable to find a link to request a device with them... only the following information:
Device Questions
Do you support other devices than the ones shown?
The list of supported devices at Skinit.com is current; however, we add new devices regularly. Check back often.
How often do you release new designs and support new devices?
We try to release new designs every week, keeping current with the latest trends and styles. We also are constantly working with device manufactures and retailers to support the latest and greatest devices coming out.
If you know of another reputable computer skin site, please let us know... especially if you have done business with them & are happy (or upset) with the results. I still have not decided on if I will skin mine. Additional feedback from those that have would be greatly appreciated.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
The reason I want to go with zagg is that I got an invisible shield for my Archos 5 media player and it works great, plus I have peeled parts off before and zagg sent me a replacement. They say they will honor lifetime replacements. I really don't want a graphic skin, just a clear one. I think the m17x should be beautiful enough without a colorful design....
Btw I have already sent an email to zagg to request the m17x r2, hopefully with screen coverage. -
Yeah but if the black aluminum case gets scratched the scratches will show up silver right? Plus I keep seeing on this forum that the black is supposed to be a fingerprint magnet.
-
I have a black R2 & a red R1. Both show fingerprints enough that it bothers me.
-
I just ordered an Invisible shield from Zagg for the M11x. I would like one for the R2, just not on the screen. I think it will contribute to more glare, if thats possible. I've been pleased with their products. I have a Zagg invisible shield on my iPod Clickwheel 3G, iPod nano, and my Kindle DX. Pain to put on, but great protection.
-
Well actually for the short amount of time that I had the screen portion of the invisible shield on my archos 5 it actually cut down glare without making the screen harder to read, and the touch was just as responsive. However I messed up with the screen portion and got dust specks underneath it which made me just remove the screen cover. Who knows, I haven't seen the m17x's screen yet so I can't be sure. But if I can't get screen coverage with a zagg I'll just do what other people say to do: put a big MF cloth in between the keyboard/touchpad and the screen when I close it so the screen doesn't get any marks/scratches.

lol I think he's implying if you put an aluminum shield on the screen, it might be hard to see what's on the screen... -
Check: http://www.buyviewguard.com/en-us/1...Width-15.08"-x-Height-8.47"-16:9-Aspect-Ratio)
Since the actual glass covering the screen is wider and higher than the 17.3" screen the recommendation is to buy the 20" and cut it to fit exactly the shape of the glass (with is stealth like angle at the top). -
Teflon is not hard enough to avoid scratches.
There are liquids coats used usually for sport cars and formula cars. Some of them are even used by the army to cover airplane cockpit, radars, etc. nothing stick on them after applying the coat, no scratches to the painted parts and you can clean it easily. -
Hmm, sounded more like sarcasm about the aluminum enclosure that is already on the computer, hence " outer shell".
-
That's great pal!
Can it also be taken off?
" if you don't know where you go..." God Save Lewis Carrol and his wise cat! -
Yes you can its sticky back. It applies to the case perfectly
But i wouldnt recommend it too much, the stickyness may go after a few applications-removals. glossy finish well worth the money -
You could always use the clear aluminum from star trek iv.
-
I believe one of the most joyful experience of owning an Alienware M17x is being able to touch the beautiful, cold, anodize aluminum body.
-
This is why I recommended above the l iquids coats used usually for sport cars and formula cars. I have used many of them, also in plastic lids and other devices, and beside avoiding scratches very well it make the surface very slicky and easy to clean.
-
Yea but there's not much joy in wiping it down with mf cloths afterward
-
Think of it as your personal M(ix)17 of a Rolls-Bentley-Masserati-AshtonMartin-Ferrari-Stealth... and you will like to wip it before your neighbors...
-
That sounds soooooo wrong.
-
Don't the battle-damaged Clone Troopers from Star Wars look cooler than the pristine, white puss... Storm Troopers? As a fellow OCDer I'm going to purposefully weather my M17x; make it look like its traveled a couple light-years.
-
hmmm.... this laptop look more like a sports car than a storm trooper. so I'd have to say your example is invalid.
-
Zagg is a total waste of money! Why not save the money, then when your m17x gets scratched up just have the case reanodized or powder coated. It would probably be less than paying Zagg over $200 bucks!
-
No a spaceship, a stealthy spaceship
-
Woah $200? Where did you get that number? The zagg skin for the Area-51 M17x costs $55. And that gives you guaranteed lifetime replacements. Plus their skins are really nice quality and don't peel easily, and if it does peel zagg will send you a new one so its no problem...

EDIT: And anyway where can you get things reanodized? And wouldn't you have to remove the aluminum case from the computer to safely do that? -
I'm also looking to get a protective skin for my M17x. Do you guys know if peeling off the invisible shield would remove the paint. I've used a couple of invisible shields for other gadgets and they stick on really strongly
-
Hmm. I kind of doubt it. If it does I'd be really disappointed in Alienware's coating. But it doesn't really matter anyway, zagg doesn't have an invisible shield for the m17x and from the response I got from them I doubt they're going to any time soon.
Protective skin for the m17x R2?
