I haven't tested with a 1st generation i3/i5, but I know all 1st generation Clarksfield quad core i7's support 8 GB sticks. My R2 had 16 GB, though I bought a different brand, I had Corsair Value Select 1333 MHz DDR3 sticks. The 8740W/M6500/W701 laptops from HP ,Dell, and Lenovo respectively had 4 RAM slots and supported 32 GB RAM

Well I went to bestbuy and managed to get a nice deal, 2x8 gig sticks of Corsair Vengeance ddr3 for 145$, but my laptops only showing 8 gigs total ram in windows 7 ultimate 64bit, and shows nothing in the bios. People obviously are running 16 gigs on these, so what do I need to do? Thanks.

Okay so CPU-Z shows the ram as 16 gigs, if windows is only recognizing 8 gigs, wont it only use 8? Does that make 16 pretty useless? I know very few apps will ever use 16, but just wanted it to be recognized and be ABLE to used someday.

Does this look right? Thought these laptops only supported 1333 mhz ram, but looks like my stock clocks are running 1400.

BIOS will show 0 MB per DIMM, the R2 never officially supported 16 GB RAM. Try reseatting the RAM, sometimes if it's not seated right, Windows won't read the RAM properly.

WOW! I'm glad it worked out with that. Keep the original RAM for warranty purposes if there is any warranty left on the machine ;)
