Hi, I just bought an M17X-R2 w/ Dual 5870s+RGBLED Screen with 285 days of warranty left for $1100, do you guys think that is a good deal?

Anyways, I was looking at the parts number and this is what I came up with in terms of the screen...

8WG28: Module, Liquid Crystal Display, 17WUXGA, Light Emitting Diode, M17X10

    Is this an RGBLED screen?

Checking up on the R1/R2 parts list thread...these are the screens...

    K1NFP - 17" Samsung RGBLED (1920x1200) 1200p WUXGA
    9PHFF - 17.0" UltraSharp WUXGA (1920x1200) 1200p RGBLED Display with TrueLife

    Can anyone clarify?

    Yes it should be
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.

If in doubt, ask the seller to give you a screen shot of HwInfo or Astra32, under the Monitor section the screen serial numbers should be either K1NFP€170CT or J2CY8€170CT , the latter is the latest RGB LED panel Dell used for the M17x R2. I had both and can tell you that when calibrated there's no difference.

BTW that's an awesome deal you got there. Congrats!

I had both as well due to stuck pixel. my first one was the J model and it appeared more reddish (even with calibration) and less bright than my current K model (the replacement). there was also more light leakages in the J model but i think that's more of quality build issue. i prefer the K rgbled. you can not tell which rgbled you have until it is shipped to you because the dell# in the invoice is different for unknown reason.

as for the deal, without knowing your cpu/hd, etc, it's hard to tell. did you get it with the coupon dell normally gives out?

I actually bought it from an NBR member here that posted it up on eBay!

    The CPU/HDD isn't anything special..

    CPU:i7 720QM
    HDD: 500RPM 7200RPM...standard stuff

Thanks for the replies guys! I am super excited to receive this thing in the mail, I can barely wait! I am coming from an M14x and expect huge differences :D

Nice man, With a system like that You should join our F@H team (link in sig) The R2 GPU's do pretty good at folding. But your definately going to be enjoying the RGBLED screen. Greatest screen everrrr

Oh, and if you want to upgrade, ES CPU's (920XM) have dropped in price. I think they are < $300 Now and heck of a great chip.

After contacting the seller, it turns out that the laptop was originally shipped with a non-RGBLED screen even though he ordered it. I can't believe Dell would do this! Great seller so far though. I woke him up (it's the middle of the night there) and he took the time to do it for me and was honest.

Anways, luckily, he noticed and called Dell immediately and got the RGBLED sent to him.

He sent me a screenshot (HwInfo) of the laptop and it does indeed now have RGB.

    Samsung 170CT J2CY8

Is there any noticeable difference between the two types of RGBLEDs?

How does one go about calibrating a screen like this?

    Spyder Calibration...software calibration?

I used a Spyder Pro but you can have decent results with software.

Thanks for the replies guys, I was worried for a bit but glad the system has an RGBLED after all. The excitement continues!

Just a couple more general questions...

    1. I have been reading about the 5870x2 in crossfire stuttering in low-frame rates or just stuttering in general. Can anyone comment on this? I used to have a single 5870 in my old Sager 8690 and it performed phenomenally and was expecting two of them to be beast! Is this still the case or are my expectations too high?

    2. I had a Crucial M4 SSD in the M14X I just sold (sold it with the laptop), would raiding 2 7200RPM HDDs give me similar performance or would it be noticeably slower?

Thanks for bearing with me guys, I can't contain all the excitement! Something about being excited brings out the OCD side of me.

    1. Sorry can't comment on the 5870 too much..

    2. RAIDing 0 two mechanical drives will improve speeds in exchange to complete data loss in case one of them fails. To answer your question, no RAID 0 of two mechanical drives will reach the speeds of the slowest SSD. Difference will or won't be noticeable depending on your daily tasks.

Again congrats on your new system. Enjoy it!

    1) I haven't seen anything with the 5870 Mobility, but then again the only games I really play is Team Fortress 2, Starcraft 2, and Modern Warfare 3.

    2) RAID 0 mechanical drives IMO are pointless. You double your risk of failure, and if 1 drive fails, you are screwed for data.
