Question for R3 owners.. happy with Black/red or wish you got the other color???

well my short time is coming to an end with my r3 and i have to mail it back (because if chipset recall it I would have kept it). I was looking at some pics of the r3 in red and it has grown on me quite a bit. i didnt realize the keyboard area is still black on the red version ( which i like) . my only questions are :

1. Does any other color besides red for alienfx look good with the nebula red? i have a hard time picturing other glow colors with the red.

2. do you regret choosing the color you got?

I got black. and while i feel its timeless i think it looks great with the blue glow. I just wonder how much i'll like the red.. i think its worth a shot when i re-order my next r3 with the fixed chip.

if anyone has any good pics of the red i'd love to see them.

 

1-There are a few colors that look alright with red but the red AlienFX still looks a lot better than any of the other colors. The one color I can't stand is green, makes it look like a friggin christmas tree lol.

2-Don't regret it one bit, on all of my other AW's black was always my first choice and red was never an option as I didn't like the cherry/gloss red. With this it's a deep blood red that's flat and almost changes color slightly under different light angles.

appreciate the input and yeah id love to see a few pics ! The only color i use and planned to use is the medium blue. If you could take a pic of the blue and red lighting that would be amazing. On the r2 i never liked the big black plastic piece on the cover which i felt took away from red and silver. on the r3 the all black exterior just looks a little too plain and boring.. especially with the m11x styling which i dont like. i figure red will spice things up and add a little character.

 

Nice thread! +1 I've been also having a hard time whether to choose black or red. All laptops I've owned are black.

Another reason I'm leaning away from black is because under different lighting it kind of just shines greyish and looks even more plasticky an rubbery which it pretty much is. I think I'm 90% on red for my next order which will be a keeper for sure.

 

I have tried all 3 colors on R2 and the NEBULA RED was HAWTNESS...i would imagine the r3 the Nebula Red looks amazing as well compared to plane jane black.

Ditto. I don't regret my choice at all. And I have my AlienFX dialed to a teal color, my favorite. Wish there was a logon screen in that color, though.

 

Have any of you started to feel like the rubber coating will peel off?

 

yes mine has already begun to peel... funny thing is its just below the pointed edge facing you on the base when the lappy is open so its not an edge that touches when flipped onto its front. Its peeling underneath a little already. well more like bubbled at the edge but if i touch it with my nails I know it will peel. The lid however shows no signs at all.

 

OK, now I have been able to deal with all the other problems, limitations, etc. But peeling? Is this something that is repairable, or possibly something that is going to steadily get worse? Any chance you can post a link to a picture?

 

I'll take one tomorrow. It looks like clearcoat peeling on a cars paint. It's very small but does bother me alot. Probably the biggest reason I'm so happy about the chipset recall.

I decided though. Red it will be! I saw sine pics and red even looks decent with blue lighting. All red is just a little much for me.

I don't watch much tv at all but I was flipping channels earlier and saw thstbtv show with some nerds.. I saw the one nerd had an m17 r2 and it was..... Red lol. It looked dam cool. I think it was a sign.

 

Yeah the peeling stuff would be an instant cause for a very ticked off call to Dell for me. Mine is showing absolutely no signs of weakness or peeling at all other wise it would be going back right away. Sounds like you may have got a faulty coating as it was never an issue on my M11xR2(same coating) and hasn't been an issue on this. Sorry to hear it Emm3.

 

Ok guys I updated my review post with some basic pics, don't expect Mandrake quality at this point as I had to just snap a few with my HTC Incredible's cam but they are there. I went with red and love it; though my co-workers lol'd@me today for having a "red glowstick laptop" haha.

alienfx only looks good with red/orange/yellow

 

Both colors look great its a choice really. However with the red I found the details on the lid to be more noticeable and I thought that wass a good thing.

I was actually disappointed when they revamped the r3 lid, removing the plastic piece. I thought it added a lot of character. In fact, one of the things that kept me swaying back toward the r2/m15x was the lid styling (aside from the anodized aluminum body).

Alternatively, if the m15x got a Sandy Bridge upgrade, I would definitely have gone that route because of the footprint difference since I'm getting the laptop for school work more than play.

Other than that, there was no question at all about getting a non-black Alienware.
