Very simple. I'm not good with computers i'm simply curious.

Why is the alienware M17x R3 only $1499 compared to the R2 at $1699?

Also, is the casing on the R3 made of the same material as the R2?

2 videos cards in the R2 vs 1 video card in the R3.

you need to decide what you want for an overall system specs and features. The r2 has a better quality screen and support for dual graphic cards, made of aluminum and xtreme processor support. The r3 has newer cpu, single graphics/3d, longer battery life, soft touch plastic, HDMI in and Wireless streaming. Do the research and see what fits your price range better. The r3 will be slightly slimmer and maybe 2 lbs lighter. R2 is BEAST and R3 is BEAST jr. Both are excellent systems and will be able to game on HIGH on most games without any issues.

Oh...plastic. That alone is enough to turn me off completely to the R3.

it take that back :D ....don't quote me on it but it seems like if anything it would be soft touch plastic with magnesium internal casing like m11x. I would wait it out a senior member DANEGRCLOSE got one but it will be like 3 week before we see people get them and review them. If you are looking for build quality then r2 is built like a TANK.

I doubt the R3 will have a secondary MXM slot. :(

The R3 is more cheaply built it seems. Dell is cheapening the m17x for some reason, maybe for their XPS line to succeed it (as they've been kinda pushing for a while), or for this rumored m18x or w/e. We'll see. I'm very disappointed though.
