    Hi guys, sorry for posting such a random "thread", i have a quick question for the audience;

    In the R1 - On the MCP79 chipset on the motherboard, there usually is a thermal-pad. I went ahead and replaced this thermal pad with thermal grease. Is this dangerous, or, should i say, are there any backdraws of doing this?

    Also, i got some thermal grease getting under the plastic cover that sit son top of the chipset, is this dangerous? could it cause disfunctionality?
    Here is a picture;

    The white "cream" right outside the die is the thermal-grease below the plastic cover.

    I would be really thankfull for all quick answers, cheers.

    Also, while removing thermal grease, i also acciedentaly lost some thermal grease onto the CPU-Motherboard connectors.

    Image below describes what i mean (Spot is marked with green/yellow thin circle);

    Will this cause disfunctionality? I don't have any item small enough to clean it away, any tip?

    Thanks again!

    - Scott.

    Try and clean that with a que-tip or something similiar. I don't think it will cause any issues though.

    As for your first question, I believe that is the integrated GPU on the R1. assuming you get proper contact between the heatsink and the die, you should be fine using thermal paste.

    I would advice you to use a piece of thermal pad between the heatsink and the MCP79 die, It tends to get really hot there and thermal paste will go on the sides loosing contact between the two, the gap is ~1mm.

    You can remove the plastic cover and then clean that surface with a brush (tooth brush), same goes for the thermal paste inside the CPU socket.

    Make sure everything is dry before you power on the system!

    Thanks guys.
    Will i have to put the plastic cover back after taking it off, or can i just leave it off?

    Just leave it off, it will break anyway.

    Thanks for the reply,

    - Also, i just washed the whole system in Alcohol. (80%), how long would you guys suggest me to let it dry? I've dried the most part off allready with paper.
