Just curious if anyone has any experience with upgrading their processors on their R1s. I am currently considering a Q9200 ES as I can't really justify paying nearly the price I paid solely for my m17x just to get a 100mhz upgrade for a Q9300.

The performance gain seems to be fairly great all things considered. I suppose I am looking for individuals that have used this processor, or have really just upgraded their processor after their initial purchase.

Yep chiefs it should be an awesome CPU upgrade in terms of performance.
You will be very happy.
I too was recommended to upgrade to the Q9200 last time as it was much cheaper and only slightly less than than the QX9300. SO well worth it.
Also while you wait for your new CPU you can OC the current Q9000 in the bios to 2.4Ghz.
Cheers.

I did just that upgrade, Q9000 to an ESQ9200 from that very seller on Ebay, could not be happier.

If you use throttlestop to overclock, there isn't much of a point going for a QX9300 over a Q9200:

Glad to hear that - did you have any trouble cobbling the computer back together, or any issues overclocking it once you had it up and running? What speeds do you have it clocked at?
-
is there any upgrades for the qx9300 or is the best you can get?
-
Thats Top of the line for the R1 chiefs!
Cheers.

Going to have to disagree with you there. I have not heard of any Q9200 chips being able to go past 3 GHz for very long where pretty much ANY OEM QX9300 can do as high as 3.2-3.2 GHz without ThrottleStop.
The QX9300 is more stable at high overclocks and also does not void your warranty as it was a chip offered by Dell. Never mind the legal complications involved with owning an ES.....(yes, it is illegal). Unless you are a bencher, I would just overclock the Q9000 and be done with it. The speed difference will be almost unnoticeable between the Q9000 and Q9200 -
I maxed out a wee bit below 3.0. Can't remember the exact number now. Sold the rig a while back.
Diassembling and changing the CPU was fun, a bit nerve wrecking, but all in all fun. First time i gutted a laptop, but if you take your time and go slow it's not hard.

To get anything above 2.933 stable, you gotta up the vcore. Mine runs fine with a 1.25v@ 3.066, [email protected]. and [email protected]. Temps aren't bad at all either. Gaming with SC2 and Wow wasn't even getting any of the cores to 60c @3.33. The turbo voltage is 1.3v, so Im guessing it's safe to run it at 1.35v assuming my temps stay this low. I've read that the 45nm chips are pretty much safe to about 1.4 for daily use.
I was able to do this when i really pushed it though. Throttlestop is freakin awesome btw.

Looking at the above image, the processor temp is kinda high, try to keep it below 90, as u might be killing ur chip slowly or getting a better TIM like Mx-3, MX-4 or ICD7 paste to bring down the temp.
Nice upgrade bro! -
yeah, that was just for benchmarking, I'll never have it over 1.35v again. Temps are fine at 1.35v and 3.33. I can't see myself ever going beyond that for normal use. I'll prolly keep it at 3.066 for most games.

I got a OEM QX9300 for 350$ and i don't think a Q9200 will reach it's toes. The QX9300 overclock very well i don't know about 9200 never owned one but from what i looked over it's not much of a boost from the Q9000 that you can run it concrete stable @2,400 in BIOS.

look at my pic on the previous page if you want to see what you can do with the q9200.

Look at my sig to see what you can do with a real QX9300
-
For the record, I didn't try to get it any higher than that
Don't you have yours in a fridge/freezer or something anyway? -

ttnuagmada you should try overclocking your FSB too.
A mix of FSB and multi overclocking should beat out just straight multi overclocking. -

On the R1 multi overclocking with ThrottleStop actually DESTROYS the memory bandwidth
It was a sad discovery for me to make. My CPU score in Vantage would be about 17-18k if it did not hurt the mem so bad
You can use MaxMemm to verify.
And I did 3.83 on air

That is actually very true, and cannot be restated enough times.
When use FSB to overclock the QX9300, I score higher performance, consistency, and points at 3.2 GHz than I did with a purely multi-overclocked setup at 3.4 GHz. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
It sucks because it makes the older 3DMarks better at a low overclock which does not look cooler lol
I scored more at 3.33 than I did at 4.16 GHz on 01, 03 and 05, The Vantage CPU score only went up because the AI test got a good boost while the PhysX test which uses the memory bandwidth more barely can match what I see at 3.33 even though I bench it at 4.16. Adding to the fray, if you look at the OPS at the bottom of the screen in Vantage during the AI test, it reports bogus numbers compared to what is actually happening, so some clock that vantage uses for counting gets hosed when overclocking with TS. I see in the 1800 range at 4.16 GHz during the test then 2200 in the test results afterwards. -

Agreed. I ain't no overclocker, but I do tweaks and custom configurations for various, demanding games. I have found that the frame rates aren't always at the their best when I just use the multipliers to overclock.
