Guys - this is an ongoing problem that seems to be plaguing Alienware systems. I started a thread on the same subject months ago for the R2 that I have. Others have experienced exactly the same.

It manifests after your systems has gone into a sleep state and upon resume, the brightness functionality is totally gone.

We (for the R2 anyhow) have a test bios that several of us are testing out for the R2 that was released by Chris Mixon (DELLChrisM) but we have yet to receive any notification of this bix being rolled out into an official bios A** release.

I have seen several users complaing of the same issue.

I would appreciate it if you contribute your thoughts and experiences on this subject - regardless of what system you own (R1,2 or 3) to the following thread. Have a read, you will see exactly what I mean.

Has nothing to do with sleep @r3.
Same issue with mine. It seemed to start after pushing my bclk beyond 105, but guess not if others are having same issue.

No big deal. Annoying, but whatever.

ya on my R3 this is unrelated with sleep as that i NEVER use sleep, suspend or hybernate.

this is an issue with non-stock vid drivers.....to add to my issues...i cant get my 1680x1050 external to work properly either with 11.4 (or 11.3 modded). i extend the display but on the external, the screen wont fit in the window...it is too low and i cant manually adjust the monitor controls enough to make it fit....it worked fine with stock drivers.

What does the title of my thread say...."reference drivers - AMD!!!" - you use these drivers, your brightness goes up the wall...if you dont believe me, try running dell stock drivers and see how you get on.........

I also said that it was a "similar" issue to that of the R2...not the same but happens when reference drivers are used. R2 owners can adopt a test bios that cures it....for you guys with R3's - your stuffed!

i can confirm that using stock drivers makes all of my issues go away........i cant tell you why i always want to use the ATI latest/greatest lol. its jsut the OCD part of my brain that NEEDS to update drivers lol. i dont really see any difference performance wise...i am going back to the stock.....untill 11.5 comes out and i repeat the insanity. :)

Without a bios fix for the issue, you will be wasting your time if you expect brightness controls to work normally whilst using any reference driver .... trust me, Ive been on this problem for a LONG time......nothing else will fix it...no number of clean installs will do anything - doesnt matter what order you clean install in....nothing fixes it.

Bottom line is that if you use AMD reference drivers, you WILL get this problem until Dell decide to address it like they have "half" done with the R2 bios.

As I stated, R2 owners have a test bios which does cure this problem but it hasnt been rolled out officially yet....owners of the R3 dont even have a test bios as the problem has not had significant complaints unlike the issue on he R2.

Trust me, im pretty much an expert on this problem - unfortunately. ;)
