So I recently received my R3 and have been playing a couple of games on it. When i'm not gaming, the fan is dead silent, however the moment I run a game (sometimes when I watch movies), the fans kick in quite loud, and I was wondering if anyone else has loud fans as well, or if that's just me.
I've ordered some IC7 Diamond paste so hopefully that'll help but does anyone else get high GPU temps? And I was wondering what temps people were getting in various games, I've had a look around but couldn't find any posts about it, does anyone know the link to a post about GPU gaming temps?

    I'm using the 6970m
in FFXIV i'm getting ~80C, Fans sound like they're on max.

80 is a little hight but nothing to worry about....And ya, the fan kicks in while gaming....wear a headset, its what the rest of us do.....but seriously....the fan kicks in at certian temps... repasting will get your overall temp down but not low enough to stop the fan...

well, 80 using GPU-Z, is only on the GPU3 processor, the first 2 are usually just over 70. I'm hoping, by having thermal paste in there to reduce it down past the threshold of fan level, basically have the fan running on a lower speed due to lower temps would be a lot better for me.
And I do have a headset but it's a cheap one so I have to turn the music/sound up a bit to not hear the fans.

Does kick in pretty loud, but I bet(read: hope) this speed keeps the GPU and CPU at fair temperature. The first time I heard them, I hooked up my desktop speakers to the laptop.

Well I've only had my laptop for just over a week, which is why I've been semi-concerned about the noise, because it goes from very loud to DEAD SILENT(literally would be able to hear a pin drop in the room) within a couple of seconds of closing games, so wasn't sure if it was meant to be like that.

it is......switch to intel graphics and its REALLY silent...im guessing that might hurt your FPS though lol

People that say 80C is fine with fans going full blast are just flat-out wrong. Do you even have it overclocked?

I have my 6970 HEAVILY overclocked, and it only goes to its MAX temp of 73C while running Furmark and Crysis 2.

When playing less intense games, the fan does not blast, and the temps do not reach 80. If I were you I would try the repaste, and if things don't improve, return it.

80C is within spec, which is probably why AW shipped the machine out. Could it be cooler? Yes. Will it go nuclear? Not likely.

If it makes you uncomfortable, you could attempt to repaste.

As for the fan behavior, it seems to be normal. The controller appears to be using 80C as its threshold. When the GPU load drops the fans go immediately to the lower state because they don't have to do much to achieve 80C. The 6970M isn't stupid. The chip immediately throttled when it left the 80C threshold when I was overclocking and was back down to the low 70s within seconds. Using that info I dialed in optimal OC settings for my particular chip. I'm happily running at 800/1000 clocks on my GPU with the GPU staying well under 80C.

Run your games with V-Sync. With your frame rate caped at 60FPS older less demanding titles, for example Left4Dead 2, will not use 100% of the GPU since it doesn't need to work that hard to achieve 60FPS, and therefore your gaming is quieter. If you leave V-Sync off, its likely that your card will run full blast in an attempt to give you more than 60FPS even though your screen can't display it.

If you're playing modern titles like Crysis or Metro....well...just accept that the R3 is going to be LOUD.

What does HEAVILY oc'd mean? What program do you use? Does OCing it void warranty? TYIA!

Yes of course it voids your warranty.

OC'd to 800/1100. SapphireTRIXX. And no, it does NOT void your warranty. I don't see why someone would say yes to that question aside from ignorance. It WOULD void your warranty if you did it wrong and it burnt up your GPU (very difficult to screw it up that badly), otherwise, no.

In other words yes it voids your warranty. :p

As overclockers we operate under don't ask don't tell. They won't know OC happened.

Anyways its pretty hard to kill the chip because of its safety throttling. Its more likely that the heat from the GPU will cause your HDD to work outside of its operational limits since the poor guy has no real way of shedding that heat away. For instance, my HDD has a max ambient operational temp of 60C. With the GPU OCed it definitely started climbing into that danger zone. Poor HDDs aren't built the same way GPUs are.

I get 82-83c on my main gpu (5870m) in my r2, and 78-79c on the 2nd one, so I do not see why people are freaking out...

The temp difference between the r3 users is probably caused by different ambient temperature. A few extra c in room temp may add a few c on your gpu temp.

    just an FYI..
you can always use HWiNFO32 to control the fan speeds of the R3

Well, I'd much rather try to control the temps on the GPU if I can, and yes V-sync is on as I never go over 60FPS for any games, main heat issues are with ffxiv (which has a couple of known issues with graphics anyway), but it's just good to know my GPU/Fan isn't broken or defected in some way. It goes to about 81.5C at most, so hopefully with the paste coming next week, i'll be able to bring that under 80 and therefore reduce fan levels. And It's not OC'd as I don't really have any need to OC yet, maybe in a year or 2 when then 6970m can't run games on maxed settings at 680MHz. Probably even more than that if i'm lucky.

    It's FFXIV related issue
My desktop with GTX460 highest temperature ever achieved was with FFXIV
i own +100Steam game none of them even make the card run as hot as FFXIV
The game is badly optimized specially in cities, only half of CPU/GPU is used and frame rate drop to 1x or low 20 that's without mentioning the ccazy stutter inside cities or crystals with many people around it

Good thing is i don't play it anymore the game was total crap.

I run crysis 2, Rift and DA2 all on highest setting and never get above the very low 70's (I think 72C is the highest I have seen on GPU or CPU) I also rarely hear the fans.
