Do you need to upgrade windows 7 from home premium to support more than 16GB? I am just curious not planning on exceeding 16GB anytime soon.

I'm hoping that's wrong as I was thinking you could use 4x4gb (I have Kingston HyperX sitting here ready to go)

You can do 4x4. If you custom build a m17xr3 if you were to have it shipped with 16gb it says 4x4gb.. So if dells ships it... U can do it ^^

    Does this help?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/559613-best-aftermarket-ram-m17x-r3.html

A few ppl have the actual part no. in their sig's. I've check the AU Kingston site and the max ATM is 4gb sticks, although there are 8gb sticks out there via Newegg and elsewhere.

(Or you can get the part number though the links in the post).

Edit 1: You may also want to look at this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/561700-m17x-r3-ram-swapping-guide.html

Edit 2: I may have be incorrect about the 8gb sticks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104230 Perhaps someone else could clarify.

@theprophetofdoom, You need Win 7 x64 (Home, Home premium, prof, ultimate or enterprise) to use more then 3,75Gb of RAM so if you already have Home (premium) x64 you're good.
