So I recently got my R3 an I'm completly in love with the system. It came in perfect condition and I've not encountered any problems yet.
So I've got my system at home, but in less then a month I'll be moving on campus as a freshmen. What do you think about the mobility of the m17x?
Basically, I was too impatient to wait 2 more weeks for a paycheck and ordered my system without an upgraded warranty. Is it true that even within the 21 days, you can't upgrade the warranty for the same price as when the system was purchased?
Due to warranty and mobility, I've just been considering downgrading my beast to a M14x for the increased mobility and to make sure to include the warrenty this time >.>
Can I get some input?

Not going into numbers,i previously own a M15x,comparing to the M17xR3 now, there is not much difference.Just make sure you get a proper backpack & you'll be fine.

My mistake there, had M15x instead of M14x. Thanks for your input though!
I do have the Orion backpack and it seems like it should work out well. I'm still quite curious about everyone's opinions. -
Mobility shouldn't be a problem.
I move my M17x R3 around almost every day from home to work. The only thing I suggest is getting another power brick so you just need to pack up the machine. -
I will be lugging my around campus all next year. My m15x did fine just make sure you have a good backpack and room. With 4 hours of battery life (atleast) you may be able to just charge when in at home. The only issue I found with my m15x was people commenting on how do I carry that system around all day.
System will stand out on campus so be ok with people asking questions.
From what I know once you buy the system you have to sell a kidney to upgrade warranty after you purchase. This is why I upgrade to two years complete care.
You will be fine if your ok with the size. Great keyboard, good battery life, and nice screen=Perfect for notetaking/school. -
I travel with my R3 everyday. I have a large leather briefcase that fits everything and it fits well under the seat of most planes. I almost sent it 300 feet up the tower I was working on the other day too
That said, I really don't think I would wanna carry it from class to class, all day long. The back pack should make it much easier then a shoulder briefcase, but it's still a heavy laptop in comparison to most others.
Downgrading to a 14x size also seems like a bad idea though, as gaming on a 17" 1080P is wonderful. Is buying another small (cheap) laptop for school completely out of the question? I pretty much skipped the college life, but an 11" laptop would seem optimal to me if I was going from class to class. The desk's in some classes may be pretty small, making your monster R3 seem like it's swallowing your work station. While my laptop goes everywhere with me, I believe my laptop traveling situation to be much different then yours. -
I don't have the laptop yet but I've thrown about 20lbs worth of stuff (old laptop) in the m17x messenger bag and it feels very comfortable. Usually I only have issues when I'm in mule mode and carrying 100lbs of other stuff 1/2 mile downtown.

I have an R2 which is slightly bigger and heavier than the R3. Last year was my freshman year of college. I didn't have any problem using it on campus in Manhatten. I carried it to all my classes, the cafeteria, etc daily. No problems at all. Yes it is heavier and bigger than your average notebook, but it's still portable if you're willing to carry a few extra pounds (which isn't a bad thing either).

I'm a junior in college.
From experience I can tell you that lugging an extra 5 lbs in laptop (That's about how much more the m17x weighs) is the very least of your worries. You will have so many books, binders, and notebooks, that those extra 5 lbs are totally negligible.
And when you finally do take it out of your backpack, be prepared to feel like a bad***. As Jwolf pointed out, Alienware is a pretty unknown brand in most places, and people will want to know why your laptop makes their MacBook Pro's look like McDonald's happy meal toys. -
Back when I was in school I would carry 50+ lbs of books. I NEVER went to the locker in High School. Everything for every class was with me all day long. In college it was just a few classes a day so it was less.

Thanks for all the input, again. You guys really boosted my confidence in my m17x. Now to call in and see what I can do about the warranty.

When I went to college, I got this beast 15" dell machine that I lugged around (It had a desktop processor in it to give you an idea!).
I then switched to this 17" ~9lb beast (was top of the line back then - 256mb 6800gt!) and lugged that around. I eventually stayed at school about 12hrs a day (commuter campus) and I can't think of a time I didn't have my laptop at school.
I look back now and think "hell yes that was worth it" -
Well i take mine with me to work and back on a daily basis (i work shift) and i do it on my Moped.
Personally i think its very mobile.
As for the upgraded warrenty, i spoke to a Dell UK rep and they told me i can upgrade it when the standard one yr warrenty runs out. As for the prices quoted i think for 4 years it was about £300 which isnt too pricey if you ask me. -
wait for another 6 months also, Dell will call you and ask you if you want to extend your warranty at a very good discount. It happened to me with the m17x r2, I got another 4 years of warranty for only $400.00 which is a big deal...
This is the back I carry my m17x r3 and even I used to use it for the m17x r2 (I have 2 of them) Amazon.com: Samsonite Unisex - Adult Aramon NXT 17 Inch Laptop Shuttle: Clothing -
