Hey guy's! Recently sold my Asus G73JH-A1 in the hope of a more powerful model, the R3. Anyways you don't need the whole story, basically i was wondering on arrival, what i should update immediately to better the performance? I.e. the BIOS etc, or any other tips to help me get the best out of the system? It has 12GB RAM, comes with the 6990m too.

Any suggestions or points in the right direction appreciated!

Start with the system BIOS - make sure you are on the latest.
Next, any Dell VBIOS releases for the 6990.

Once thats covered, look at each Dell driver push and verify you are at least on that revision or higher (sometimes, it may be better to update from the actual device support page - example: Intel or Synaptics - depends on the case, so research).

All of the drivers for the M17xR3 can be found here - take a look at the various M17xR3 threads linked in post#1 here:

if its new or relatively new, i don't think you'll have to worry about bios/vbios.

just install the latest ATI Catalyst driver (currently 11.9 or 11.10 beta) and off you go. If you want to make it faster, get an SSD. Oh and if the temps get toasty, get a good tube of your fav thermal paste and redo the CPu and GPU. The stock paste job is pretty bad

you can refer to this guide to help you with the repaste:

Thanks very much lads! Well it's a refurb, coming on friday, so it is relatively new and unused. BatBoy- cheers for that link, looks very useful! Straight to favourites.

SlickDude, i currently have an SSD in my G73 - intel x25-m, is this compatible with the m17x R3? Roger on the pasting! Will do that straight away i think.
