    Ok i'm thinking about a m17x R3 :-

Can I just buy a 64gb Crucial m4 SSD (this SSD comes with built in trim) and use it as a OS Boot drive and then use the 750gb as games/movie/music drive?

I'll buy a retail copy of windows ultimate and do a fresh install and also format the 750gb drive.

Under normal circumstances, yes you can. However it seems some people are having issues with certain SSD's working with the m17x.

ok update on this post. i'm no considering not bothering with a retial copy of windows and just using the one that comes with the alienaware. So is this the correct sequence to install :-

    1) open laptop and put ssd in on c: and remove 750gb drive and put into the second drive socket.

    2) using the windows install disc that comes with alienware, format both c and d drive.

    3) install windows onto ssd drive?

Also by default most laptops come with drive seperated into two partitions. Will I be able to turn the seperate parititions on 750gb into one singe 750gb partition? It's along time since i've done a windows installation so can't quite remember the process. and will the windows installer that comes with alienware create seperate partitions on my ssd?

yes you can.....once you get the OS loaded, you can format the drive however you like or you can even wipe it durring the install....

dont buy from Dell directly. Get the smallest & cheapest drive 7 ram from there. Buy OCZ Vertex 2 or Vertex 3 series (based on your budget and needed performance) as they are the best SSDs so far.

Buy Kingston HyperX 1600mhz rams 2x4096 so you can get use of dual channel and 8gb in total (or go for 16 gb if you like... i did).

This will make your system BEAST and ready for some serious overclocking! I have Vertex3 ssd and i have absolutely no issues and get 500MB/s speed as stated in the specs.

    just my 2 cents

Does the m17x have sata 6gb? I thought it was only sata 3gb. And can you overclock the cpu on the m17x?

M17xR3 has 2 SATAIII (6gbps) ports for the internal HDDs. I don't know enought about CPU overclocking to help you.
