My friend want to trade his 7970m with a 680m, but i don't really sure that 680m is plug and play, because i heard somewhere that amd version's heatsink is not compatible with nvidia card and vice versa, is it true?

Because your friend's laptop is an AW, why not just swap heat sink and x-bracket, too? LOL

The performance difference that he will notice will be negligible by upgrading from a 7970 to a 680 , if that is what your implying. I mean if he is dead set on doing it then they should just swap out but honestly the price to pick up a 680 just because he wants the 5-10% performance difference seems silly.

I think the thermal pads are different though so be sure you have a way of purchasing those if you get it. I had my 7970 swapped out by Dell for a 680m and I believe the thermal pad configuration (and sizing) was different.

I took a picture during the install as the tech noted one of the pads had fallen off during the procedure so I wanted to document what I had. It must have been put back in the correct spot as the card has been running fine ...if not I hope it burns out before my three years are up ...would more likely happen the day after ;P. The 680m is the one on the bottom ...hope this helps a little :)

so we need a set of thermal pad for vrm thingy and so on, but the heatsink itself and the screw holes is identical, right :)
It's not that he want some minor increase in performance, but he need CUDA, which is a big help to his work
Again, many thanks to great help from you guys :)
