R4 8 beeps on startup after editing bios options?

So I was trying to boot from usb to reinstall Windows 10 and get rid of some odd partitions on a new hard drive I got from a friend to maximize its capacity. But when trying to boot from usb through advanced startup it didn't work. It acted like the usb didn't exist even though I've used this one before and it worked fine.

So I read online that in order to boot from bios, first I have to enable boot from legacy mode from the bios. And also have it set to UEFI, which it already was. So I was told that after that I just needed to restart and it should boot from the usb. But upon starting the laptop back up the screen doesn't turn on and the motherboard beeps 8 times. Which if the Dell beep codes are the same for this, then it means LCD failure.

Thing is, my monitor and graphics card, GTX 1060, were working perfectly fine before this. Everything was. So I highly doubt any hardware just up and decided to break right when I made that change. And now when I start up my computer it just beeps, so I feel like I have no way of getting back to bios since I know for sure all I need to do is revert that change and it will be back to normal.

 

Are you talking about the m17xR4? Did you upgrade it with a Gtx1060? If so, your 1060 does not support legacy.
The only way to revert the legacy setting is to buy another (older) mxm card (like the 660m), install it, enter the bios and change the setting back to uefi.

And for the sake of not screwing up again, download "rufus" and create uefi compliant boot sticks from there.

I'm not certain this will work as I've not tried it on the M17x R4 but it does work on the R5 - you might be able to get back into the bios by removing your 1060 mxm card, open the laptop and also disconnect the edp screen connector. Then try connect an external monitor via the hdmi port and you might find the laptop will boot via the onboard graphics so you can get back to the bios and disable legacy.

Yes, its a M17x R4, and it evidently hates legacy. Thanks for the info guys. This is probably my biggest screw up ever lol It had been so long since I installed the 1060 I guess I forgot about how I got it to work and what not to do. And thanks for the tip Javers, Ill give it a shot and let you know how it goes.

And I'll try rufus out after this just to be safe. And in case it doesn't work, would any old mxm card work? What would be the cheapest option that you guys can recommend? Or would that be the 660m? This screw-up has me second-guessing everything I do now, so I'm trying to be more careful now.

 

Yeah, or a 765. Those work fine with legacy + uefi.
What happend with your old card? Sold it?

it was a 870m that died on me. May or may not still be able to get into bios with it. Ill give it a shot.

 

Thankfully the dead 870m was alive just enough to get into bios. Thanks everyone! Everything is looking good so far.
