As title, it always happens first thing in the morning from a cold boot. It will turn off once entering windows, it might be just as the desktop is loading, or half way through browsing the net. There isn't any blue screen, event log just shows the unexpected shutdown. Rebooting a few times eventually gets it to stay on all day, until the next morning.

I'm suspecting that its a hardware issue as this started around about the same time we had a lightning storm which took out my router along with the Ethernet port. It just shows a solid amber light and isn't recognised in device manager, its dead. I have since disabled it in the bios. So my feeling is the mobo has been zapped, but I don't know for sure.

During numerous reloads of windows however, it never powers off, seems to be totally stable. Its just every time from a cold boot it has problems.

    Things I've done/tried:
Fresh windows install on both the ssd and hdd and used them each in isolation.
Done a memory check, no errors.
Upgraded the bios and reset to default
Done the 30sec power cycling thing.
Tried plugged into mains, battery only, and both together.

Just want some ideas before I ditch it for a new desktop.

What config. do you have? That could help in eliminating certain spec specific problems.

Also which driver version you were using when the problem started? ;)

Driver for the 7970m? 13.11 beta drivers. Same one I've had for a long time as it made a couple of games stable a while back. Didn't change any drivers for a long time prior to these shut downs.

Sorry man, off-base. I hadn't see the 7970 post. Does sound like it got zapped :(. Take it out altogether and see if the machine runs OK (poor gaming of course). Just remove the fan and the two retaining screws to remove the whole assembly without getting involved with pads/paste.

I'm just getting a tingling in my spidey sense! This is probably the fourth person having very similar issues recently, I'm still looking for a common factor (rather than a star alignment!). Not Nvidia for a change :D.

So this morning the same thing occurs. Last night I had a shut down on waking the computer from sleep. This had me thinking it might be my wireless or usbs. So this morning I booted without the Cooler Master mat plugged into the usb. The mat has a built in hub with my usb mouse and headset plugged into. On boot, I had no shut down problems. I then plugged in the Cooler Master and instant shut down! I disconnected the Cooler Master and plugged in only the mouse, after a couple of minutes I got a shut down. Now I've unplugged the mouse and have the Cooler Master (with headset in hub) plugged in, and no shut downs for an hour now. Comes in and out of sleep okay. So has anyone heard of a mouse fault turning off the computer? I'm thinking maybe its the usb ports, but I've tried different ports and still get the shut downs, but only with the mouse connected.

I'd just put it down to the lightning strike. It's too weird for words, a mouse shutting down a machine . At least it's the cheapest of fixes :D.

I hope it stays OK and have you another mouse to test - I guess not? I could be something in the mouse communication chain I suppose?

I'd be surprised if its a mouse causing it. Perhaps its something to do with the way a mouse communicates over usb causing the problem. Either way, I'll try another mouse and see what happens. My guess is though, its the motherboard.
