    Hi,
I got my R2 in September 2010. Most games still run very well on it. Crysis 2 runs smoothly & BF3 runs smoothly. My R2 can't really run DX11 well but apart from that the performance is still good. My R2 specs are at the bottom.

I downloaded RAGE from steam and its all patched to the latest version. I'm on Catalyst Version 11.10. The game is quite juttery. I've reduced the settings and it still is not very smooth. The driving parts are not bad its the first person shooter bits that are poor. Any advice on what settings work best?

    Many thanks,
    Russ :)

First and foremost...Rage runs like crap. Even when you have everything sorted out it runs like crap. It is a goofy game.

Secondly, you have to get your driver updated. I think the 5870m's will work on catalyst version 12.6:

    AMD Catalystâ„¢ Mobility Display Driver

Secondly, you need the latest Catalyst application profiles to get the game to work even close to normal...

And even after all this is done...dont be surprised if the game doesnt run much better. Also...its very boring so dont waste a ton of time on trying to get it to work perfectly.

Russchilds, not to disappoint but for some strange luck I also wanted to see if they fixed anything with Rage and the drivers and yesterday I installed it and again ran like crap. At some point it was better with the initial version and some modded early drivers - then at least it ran at about 50-60 FPS.

Yeah...see what I mean? The whole game is a mess. I would have asked Steam for my money back, but I didnt feel like being laughed at.

    Thanks guys!!! :)

I've just updated and its slightly better but not great. I'm a bit worried as Doom4 is going to use this graphics engine.

I think they rushed Rage because when they concieved the idea it was fresh and new...but by the time they got the engine up and mostly running Fallout 3 and New Vegas had already been there and done that. While graphically those games dont compare...they are all around better. And New Vegas isnt even all that special. So take that Rage!! LOL

I dont know about anyone else...but I DO NOT have high hopes for DOOM 4. Seriously...id cant tell a story with their single player games and they arent that great at making multiplayer games when you compare them to their modern competitors (MW, BF).

    Here's hoping I'm wrong!

This thread motivated me to reinstall and try it out today, on my m17xr4-7970m. I remember having horrible issues that were resolved after creating a cache folder but today it was working fine, great in fact on max settings with a bit of stutter that seemed to be more disk-access related than graphics card. Then after the first garage quest, I started having horrible vertical tearing. Sadly, I was out of game-time anyway, but as long as you do not expect greatness, I find RAGE to be a fun game. But I play it keyboard/mouse for the FPS aspects and then switch to my 360 controller when driving as I cannot drive with the keyboard, and that is annoying. But I like the feel of the weapons and like how the bad guys are tougher than most, single headshots typically do take them down.

Anyway, does anyone know what the optimal cache setting is? There is small or large in the settings.

I also was happy to fun decent performance from the 7970m on rage- tried to play it a year ago on the desktop 5870 - which didn't happen. I have maybe 5 hours in now- not super exciting but not a terrible game either. Some huge monsters make things entertaining. Driving with the keyboard does suck but I get around.
