This is probably a dumb question, but I live for those. So let's say you're building up your system, and you've got about $300 in mad money to spend... is it a better idea to max out the processor, or to max out the RAM? It'll have the best GPU available, but what about the secondary support hardware? I probably will not be using a system running in SLI, so for intensive gaming, which option is better?
OR, for bonus difficulty, should I split the difference and go mid-range with both?
Fire away! I am interested to hear your thoughts on this matter. What do you wish you'd done?

I would say the CPU, assuming you have at least 8GB for gaming or something like that. Higher clocked CPU will see better performance increase in some games and virtually nothing in others, but any more then 8GB of RAM and you aren't going to see much of a gain in modern games anyway.
Obviously its better if you mention what you are actually going to upgrade to/from haha. -
It's upgrading from the sig system. I love it dearly, but I've achieved some pretty serious life goals, and I'm feeling generous toward myself. This one ran four years and did it well; I am hoping to get another half-decade out of the next one. Oh, and damnit, Alienware, bring back the anodized aluminum shell for the M17x!
-
Just get the best CPU/GPU you can and the least RAM and storage because both of those things can be bought anywhere and easily fitted.
And about the shell, us M18x boys have to have a reason for forking out the extra dosh, the aluminium is amazing. -
No arguments there. If they stay with soft touch (and only in Space Black), I may bite the bullet and go with the M18x. My R1 may not be the youngest girl at the ball, but she definitely turns a lot of heads.

I don't mind the soft touch, I am actually looking at getting a M14x because my M18x is just too big to take to sea with me anymore (only a tiny little locker) and the soft touch doesn't both me that much, but obviously the aluminium is ridiculously better feeling and makes the laptop feel better quality.
I would like to see different colours other then black and red, I love the black but I am not the biggest fan of the red. White would look awesome I think. -

The CPU would be the best part to upgrade between those 2.
RAM vs. Processor: Better Investment?
