The reason I ask is because the lack of it is the main thing keeping me from ordering an R3. I need a new system, but will not sacrifice on the screen.
I'm going the G53SW route from XoticPC because I can get an upgraded FHD + high contrast/95% color gamut screen.
I really am nervous about getting the Asus, but I can't pull the trigger on any gaming laptop without a good screen.
Any word on the AW RGBs? Why they're gone? When they'll be back?

They will probably never offer the RGB on the R3.
They MIGHT (emphasis on might) offer it on the M18x but we have to wait and see.
I agree with you though.... screen quality is really important to me and any laptop I get has to have a quality screen to even be considered.

I looked earlier on Dell UK and although you can still configure an R2, the option for ANY screen other than 1400x900 does not exist....you cant even opt for anything esle other than that res.
Makes me thankful that I have the RGBLED now......I really would miss it if I was forced to NOT have it....
Its all good having a mighty powerful system but we look at the screen and NOT the internal components....IMHO, the system and how you feel/interact with it is significantly enhanced by RGBLED - no good having a "whistles and bells" laptop if what you see at the end of the day is a lacklustre image infront of you!
Shame on Dell for not offering it on the R3 - maybe it will be offered on the M18x when released.....I hope....... -
The R3's screen isn't bad by any means. At first I thought I saw gradient colour banding, but it turns out that Steam uses web-compatible colors (It is very similar to a web browser) so its gradient shades of grey have visible banding. It handles sRGB like a champ with no visible color banding and even lighting throughout the center. There's a little bit of bleed near the bottom of the screen when you're staring at total blackness.
Like any glossy LCD panel, colors seem to be a little oversaturated and not quite as accurate as the Dell 3007WFP at my office (Its not a professional designer's monitor, but its noticibly better thanks to its got a beautiful matte screen) however I enjoy the sharpening effect that glossy LCDs have, even if it is at the cost of color accuracy; I do web design work, and the people viewing my work have wildly different monitors anyhow.
Compared to the vast majority of laptop LCDs out on the market, the R3 will likely wow most viewers; its not a game breaker because if you were THAT demanding, even the R2's screen would have been unacceptable. -
SaosinEngaged, have a look at the Clevo or Sager laptops, some retailers also have the option for 95% gamut, and you can configure it with up to a 485m or 6970m.
