At work, my boss just got a new workstation laptop. He put me in charge of installing all the company programs on it. When I first turned it on I was surprised to find it had an RGB 17.3" 1080p screen! I was completely shocked.

The laptop is a Dell Precision M6600. I'm thinking there is a good chance you could install the panel in this laptop into the R3 - from what I can tell the connectors are the same.

Has anyone given this kind of an idea any thought in the past?

Replacing only the panel in an Alienware is tricky due to the edge to edge glass, but I and others have done it. Any thoughts?

Remember, the IPS RGB LED screen in the M6600 uses the eDP connector, not the LVDS one. It has almost the same mobo as the M17x R3 with 2 different display connectors. As the AMD graphics is passed through the iGPU, it the IPS screen cannot be installed on R3's with AMD graphics because the iGPU does not support 10-bit colour. As a result, you can only install the IPS screen in nvidia systems.

I assume your workstation has nvidia graphics. If it doesn't then it is using a 90% gamut screen from AUO. It is also a very nice screen as well but it is still WLED.

Could you please check the model of the display in HWinfo.

I'm at home now, so I can't, but if I have access tomorrow to it I will.

It has a Quadro 3000m so no AMD 8900.

I forgot there was a topic along the lines of this a while ago lol - I'm kinda surprised Dell isn't offering the option since they apparently have access to the screens.

Well Dell push the M17x R3 as a 3D machine so in their mind they should offer 2 kinds of premium screen for one model. I would happily swap my 3D display for a IPS RGBLED one though. If only you lived in London, we could actually test if it works :)

did you have a possibility to check it? I'm very interested.

I had the M6600 with LG display. Quite good but not enough for me. That's why I'm coming back to R2.
I also changed the display to AUO v4 glare 95% gamut but it was still far away the rgb.
