Hi guys, so my old M15x had a meltdown (literally) and Dell is being awesome (after 14 phone calls and a BBB report) and doing a system exchange for an M17x r4

    here are the specs

    System configuration:

    Alienware M17x R4
    1 MC9FV 180W A/C Adapter, 3P
    2 R609C 125V Power Cord
    3 V6NP6 Base Assembly
4 JY598 AlienFX Color, Mars Red
    5 TG4MT Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Service Pack 1
    6 05TRG Dell Outlet Alienware M17x R4 Laptop
    7 RGP31 Processor: Intel Core 3rd Generation i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
    8 14Y4G 6GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
    9 XJG4G 500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
    10 K68JV Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
    11 FX0PJ 2 GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M
    12 D1MN3 Intel Centrino Wireless 2230, 2x2 bgn + Bluetooth
    31 JHR2Y Software
    32 N7XT6 17.3-inch WideHD+ 1600 x 900 60Hz WLED
    33 2J4FR Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
34 M3CD8 Stealth Black with Soft Touch Finish
    35 CJGVX 9 Cell Battery
    36 G71MJ English keyboard 12:12:07 PM Virender_190661
    ETA: 3-4 business days

Not the top model, but hey it's free.

I plan on upgrading to SSD drives, 16g of ram and a Killer N wireless card, but my main focus is to replace the 1600 x 900 screen with a 1920 x 1200

My question is this, and I am sorry as I am sure it has been asked, but a search did not really give me a direct answer.

How easy is it to replace just the LCD?

This is what I am looking at as a replacement

17 0" LCD Screen for Alienware Area 51 M17x R2 LED WUXGA FHD RGB Laptop Display | eBay

Thanks in advance for any help

First of all, congrats for the new laptop.

    As for the LCD upgrade.

The RGB led does not fit on m17x r4.

Though you could get a panel with like 92% color gamut (i think it was the AUO V4 glossy)

It is also extremely hard to replace because the plastic cover on the screen is glued on the LCD and you would likely destroy both the LCD and the plastic cover on the process.

I remember seeing a thread about the upgrade guide for RGB led on m17x r3 but he did not post it due to complexity of the process

    Gotcha, thanks for the reply.

I'll hunt for one that will fit or go with 1080

Or just get the whole lid assembly with it already installed, as it seems to be worth the money for ease of install

its probably easiest to just get the panel off of ebay. I snagged mine for a paltry $120. :)

Looking right now and only found the 1080, which would actually be fine for my use.

    Was it a difficult replacement?

    Yep. it's awful.

Unless you pay GCI a small fortune.

I moved to Anchorage to work at the Elmendorf/Richardson hospital, and then out of there to AZ.

    I rarely miss fairbanks
