I got 2 questions that i hope some people in here can help me with.
First of all, after i removed my old drivers and installed the 12.7 beta drivers, it seems like my computer now says my card is a ATI firepro M7820, but the other one i got for crossfire is still the 5870.
I have tried to remove and install some old drivers and it still says the same thing. I opened my pc and took my card out and looked at it, still its a 5870 card. But everywhere i look in my computers system (controlpanel etc) it tells me its a ATI firepro M7820 ... what the ?
the other question is, every driver update after 12.3 has the same error to it. In CCC it never chances to the update i have done. I have been on 12.4 and 12.6, now 12.7 and in the "software" it tells me its on 12.3, should i be worried about it? or is it just an error in the program?
should i be worried about these things? I dont have any problems with the games i play, im just worried that something may be wrong with my computer?

i have this problem too
i have been download the last beta driver on my asus g73jh , last night.
I had 5870 but the windows show me that i have M7820 firepro today ! is this -
Does it game the same? I mean, if you start up a game that you had before the driver update, does it work the same? If it does...then who cares what the software calls it?
-
its give the same performance of 5870
but its annoying .
one more thing, why my PC Spec. Dont show under my posts ?

mine don't show up as 5870 anymore either but if you go and download the 12.6 mobility drivers they will show up as 5800 series again. must be mobility drivers though
-
I started the first thread about the misidentification. I finally got it resolved by downloading the mobility package someone recommended to me. (12-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql). I installed that after the stock drivers and that fixed it.

Have you tried to see if 3DMark and GPU-Z work now that your card is correctly identified? I think it is possible that some parts of the non-mobility driver you had installed were configured "incorrectly" and that both 3DMark and GPU-Z tried to enumerate this portion, causing them to faile (just a complete guess though).....
Thanks!

GPU-Z has been opening and running without incident...but 3DMark still gives errors when running benchmarks. I still think there is a bit of hardware failure going on with my GPU, but I'm not going to stress over it. I will wait until the card is in hospice, then I'll see about getting a replacement 5870M or a 7970M (if the audio over HDMI is working).

You're more than welcome. Just don't use the 12.7 beta yet. They don't have a mobility package yet and the regular package says it's for the Raedon HD 5000 series (not 5000M series). I tried installing it at my card went back to the FirePro M7820.

I updated from the AMD website today and now it says I have ATI FirePro M7820 when it should be Radeon 5870. I can't find on the AMD website the download you are talking about to fix it. I only updated because things were so bad on the internet I wasn't viewing certain pages well (massive lag time to load) and pop ups weren't working at all. Things are now much much better and all internet viewing is stellar - but I would still like it to read correctly. Could you be more specific on where you found the download to fix this on AMD's website?
Much appreciated...

Did you download the MOBILITY package? I got burned that way before. There are two different driver packages. One for desktop card, and the mobility package for notebook cards. That ended up being why the card got renamed. The 12.8 Catalyst package I downloaded is named 12-8_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc. I can confirm that it installs correctly for the 5870m and the card model does not change after the driver update.

When I went to the AMD website I put in (in the area to download drivers) Notebook Graphics - Radeon HD Series - Mobility Radeon 50xx Series - Windows 7 64 bit. After that I got this page:
AMD Catalyst
Which is just a "verification tool" which I installed because so what - but that is all I got so I went to this page:
AMD Support & Drivers
And from there I selected "Latest AMD Catalyst Drivers for Radeon HD 7000, HD 6000 and HD 5000 Series" - then I selected Windows 7 64 bit and got the download which is this link here...
AMD Catalyst
Which is why I was asking how did you get it to give you the Mobility Package?? I just got the Verification tool...
Thanks for your patience...
Sandy -
Yeah, I had to do the verification tool too for the 12.8 Catalyst package. Here is the correct verification tool: AMD Catalyst. Notice it says mobility Radeon (i.e. 5800M, 6900M, etc.) in the title. That "M" on the end of our card's model number is what what makes it different. If you looked at the 12.7 beta Catalyst package the release note says its compatible with the Radeon 5800 series, whereas the 12.8 release notes state its compatible with the 5800 series and 5800M series. That small detail signifies a mobility driver which make a huge difference.

Thanks for the correct Verification Tool Link - I see the link for it now when I look at the AMD website. I installed the correct verification tool (but I don't know if it actually installed as it just kind of flashes and then nothing, makes me wonder.)
Yesterday I installed the Catalyst 12.8 which you are right, does say it is compatible with Mobility. But none the less I still show I am an ATI FirePro M7820 now. The Catalystyt download you have named 12-8_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc is not what I downloaded and installed, mine did not say "mobility" in the title (but none the less the release notes indicate it should be fine). How did you get that specific download for mobility?? Did that show after you successfully installed the Verification Tool? I can't get to that download no matter what I input into the AMD website. When I do "autodetect" I get some old driver from July 2011.
Thanks again for responding...
Sandy -
AMD auto-detect doesn't work like it should. All's I do is go to the http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...sg=AFQjCNF3bRxlJEi6QY282G-ftq7kDVIstg&cad=rja page, step one should be notebook graphics, step two Radeon HD series, step three Mobility Radeon HD 5xxx series, and step four is whatever OS you are running. That will get you to the correct tool.
To install...or rather, reinstall the correct 12.8 package, I suggest this. Uninstall ALL AMD drivers and software from your system. When you uninstall the current Catalyst Control Center, etc. from your system and reboot, Windows will default back to the last driver for the 5870m. I would recommend you then go into device manager, select the AMD GPU, open the properties box, select uninstall under the drivers tab, and make sure to check the "delete driver files after uninstalling" box to make sure the older drivers get erased too. That way all old drivers are removed. You will need to keep going in and doing this until the ATI cards show up as Generic VGA adapters in Device Manager. Now you are ready to install everything. Make sure to download the Dell 5870m drivers from their site. You want to install their Catalyst package first. It is necessary to get the CrossfireX working again. Once you install the Dell 5870m driver package, then you can install the 12.8 Mobility Catalyst package. This is the process and steps recommended to me and I can confirm that they work. -
Yes, I inputted exactly what you did from that page on AMD and all I get is that verification tool which I don't think is installing correctly. Really, I have done this many, many times since I have owned this system and never before have I had to go to another place on that website to get a download which is how all this went wrong...
I will do what you say, uninstall the drivers, etc. but I still have to figure out why the AMD website did not give me what it gave you when you inputted the same info..??..
Thanks so much for your help!!

Give me 90 minutes. I am uploading the 12-8_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc.exe to my Google Docs account, but I have DSL so it's painfully slow. Once it finishes I will PM you the link so you can download the package directly and bypass the AMD verification tool.

You rule!!

(hopefully this will post right as again I am on my smartphone and don't want to look stupid ; ) -
This experience is just one more time an image/cloning backup program like Acronis got me out of a mess. A restore takes 20 minutes and it's like whatever bad thing that happened never existed. That program has spared me countless hours, days even of troubleshooting.
Thanks so much for your help and taking the time to supply the needed download! I am back and running visually well again :hi2:

After over a week of correspondence they won't give it to me. If you hadn't been kind and linked me up I would still not have it. Which is odd because they just throw out this one which is supposed to be compatible with Mobility via the Release Notes but we all know it mislabeled our HD Radeon Mobility 5000 series.
Here is the one they just toss out there:
AMD Catalyst
And then they say over their dead body will they give me the correct one without "Verification." Really..??..
So I better hope this one package is stellar and I never need to update again - or I will need someone really nice to help me get the download in my future.
Just passing along how wonderfully helpful AMD was...
Sandy -
I got the Verification Tool problem worked out... you think it ran, because it looks like it did - but it didn't. So go into C: AMD/Catalyst_Mobility_64_bit_Utility and then run the exe file called CatalystMobility.exe... when you click on that you get a pop up window that prompts you for the download.
Hope this helps someone if they also are stumbling on the Verification Tool.
Because don't bother writing AMD - they did absolutely NOTHING helpful in any and every email exchange with them - they just tell you all is fricken stellar with their Verification Tool...
Sandy -
Well, ATI/AMD isn't known for their driver support.

So true, so true... I only wrote them to see if they would give me the download link via email in the future if Verification continued to be a problem. Their staff is hired to simply move paper around until the user gives up and leaves. It was an utterly time wasting fruitless endeavor to say the least - and all I wanted was a download, imagine if I had a real problem.
The thing is AMD does have a problem.... that one download release notes do say it is compatible with Mobility and it is mislabeling the drivers and that has nothing to do with their verification tool.
Radeon 5870 shows as ATI firepro M7820, driver error in CCC?, help!
