Rage (the game) on m17x R2

Ok so my specs are in the sig...except I am using the special driver ATI provided that is supposed to fix problems and improve performance for Rage instead of the 11.8 as listed.

So before I installed this driver I was getting 15-30 fps and performance was not great. Plus no crossfire, but I read that Rage wasnt going to support crossfire out of the box so we will have to see how that goes.

Then I install the "new" driver and FRAPS is telling me I am getting 55-60 fps. Ok sounds great. Then after about a minute I get a "pause" every 10 seconds or so. Its not like throttling down and the fps drops for a second. Its like the game pauses for a few seconds and then starts up again. Plus, still no crossfire!

I looked at GPU-Z and my temps were not out of control, Low 80's. So I dont know what is up. I am wondering if this fix I downloaded is maybe not for mobility cards? Or am I having some other problem?

Anyone have Rage installed on their R2's with similar specs to mine? If so, how is running? And if you did something to improve it, what did you do?

 

Here I will answer my own question. Apparently there was a second fix released later that fixed the "new" problems caused by the first fix. Now it is running 45-60 fps and it looks f*cking incredible.

 

From where did you get the drivers? Im still using the "battlefield 3 beta drivers" aka 11.10 and my performance in rage is... crap. It runs fine when I am standing still (60 FPS in 1080p), but when I look around it goes down to ~35 (I think this is caused by the textures-bug, you see them loading)

 

So has anyone run this on there M17x yet? Hearing that theres alot of problems with the game on AMD cards at the moment. Anyone who can confirm this. Being in the Uk i havent had a chance to play the game as its released on Friday. would be nice to get some feed back from US gamers.

 

Yo Megatony,do you mind posting a link to the second fix? The only fix that was mentioned seems to be the first fix,thanks in advance.

 

They released a 2nd special driver for it. Should be fine.

Are we not 6970m and 6990m? this just says 6000 series.

 

i couldn't find anything specific to mobile graphics cards. maybe download and try it? if it isn't compatible it won't even install....you'll get a hardware not compatible error so you have nothing to lose

The other thing you can do is wait for the official 11.10 cats which will have all the fixes inside it...but that might be weeks

 

LOL, i did and it BSOD. So dont try it. its for desktop GPU's.

 

Well it all going up brown matter creek at them moment. I have no dispaly driver or CCC but im still in HD, no large icons etc. Not sure what do do now, it wont let me update any drivers. im close to thrpwing the laptop out the window...

edit:driver installed successfully without any problems or bsod or something.also dont forget to enable vsync and triple buffer in CCC.

dude its not the driver...you are having issues installing.

Follow these screen shots. These are the official instructions for installing drivers from AMD

GPU-33: Graphics Driver Installation Instructions for Microsoft Windows 7

you have to remove the previous driver before installing these

 

1.i unistall the old driver first.(go to control panel,programs and features select ati catalyst install manager,click change then click again express uninstall all ati software).
2.i reboot system in safe mode with F8.
3.then i clean with driver sweaper.
4.again reboot in safe mode and clean with ccleaner.
5.at last reboot again and intall driver normally from setup!!!

as SlickDude80 said follow the screenshots from amd site!!

 

you don't even have to do that...AMD comes with an install manager with an option to clean all previous AMD software from system. Just use that ! Much easier

Aslo, if u unitstalled everything with Ati manager, did u have downlaod CCC individually?

 

is your computer in a weird state now? Do you need to put the old driver back on?

just wanted to throw this in:

runs great on the 580M in full-hd (with v285.38).
constantly 60fps, very few texture-caching (altough its noticeable if you move your mouse really fast).

funny thing: gpu max usage is around 40-50%, max temp after ~2 hours of gameplay 64°C

guess we need an engine-upgrade pretty soon

 

Just a heads-up for ati GPU owners,this is the latest 11.10 fix i had been using;
AMD Catalyst? 11.10 Preview Driver Version 2

& to quote Mr AndrewD@catalystCreator: "New 11.10 V2 driver includes Mobility Radeon support as well."

What i did was just install it over the old 11.9 drivers without uninstalling anything,procedure over in less than a minute,& i was able to play RAGE at near contant 50-60 fps.

 

Im using the same driver and Rage runs flawlessly like hell. Constant 60 FPS in 1080p - it never ever ever ever goes down to 59 and what not. BTW, I've the newest Rage patch as well. m17x R3 6970m. I have never played a game which looked sooooooo good but runs like the gpu / cpu havent got anything to do

 

I running this game just fine on my M17XR2 with 4870 in Crossfire, running the Rage Performance Drivers from October 4th (8.892.3), I also thought this were for desktop but tried them anyways, it installed fine without uninstalling previous stuff, so looks like I now got Catalyst Version 11.9
I might try the new 11.10 provided above in this thread, but almost afraid to mess with this any further since the game running perfect, and it is beautiful.
On a quick note, I am not able to enable Crossfire in the Catalyst Control Center, but it doesn't seem to affect the game any, if anybody has any input on enabling Crossfire on this new drivers I would appreciate it, although, like I said, the game runs perfect as is now.

 

Whoa, sorry to everyone in the beginning, shortly after starting the thread I went out of town so I didnt get back until now. Yeah so I just installed the 11.10-preview 2 drivers and the game seems to run better, although still choppy in vehicles. But what is worse, in my opinion, is that the game is boring. Seriously, its just: Go here and get this and bring it back to me so I can send you to someone who wants you to get something for them...over and over. I'd like to see a developer who is interested in decent writing and story progression get ahold of the Tech 5. Mass Effect 4: The Aftermath on id Tech 5 anyone??

 

I'm with you tony. The engine is just awesome - but the game itself? Its the complete opposite!

I only play the game because of the graphics and the atmosphere inside the towns. The story is very very flat.

And it kinda pisses me off that they focused so much on consoles during the developement the game could look even better on our PCs if they just patch the textures....

I hope they learn from this and do a proper job on doom4 and quake 5, which will be using the id tech 5 engine, too.

Coming off from just finishing Deus Ex Human Revolution I can agree on Rage, but I am actually having fun with it, plus enjoying the eye candy, it is a great engine, I am just trying to focus on the positives and have fun with it but yes I do agree is not a great game, but also not a horrible game.
I am a father of 2 teenagers, a son (16) and a daughter (14), we all gamers at home, we are so looking forward to Skyrim , this games in between are a great way to nourish the gaming fever if you know what I mean. I was pleasantly impressed with Deus Ex HR, found myself hooked to it pretty good for a while... 11/11/11 coming soon!

 

I too am a father and I have a 6 year old who I will hope someday be a gamer like me (despite what his mother hopes-lol). Skyrim will literally consume my nights (i work overnights and have lots of downtime) and to say I am excited for it is the biggest understatement of my life. LOL.

My son and I often play Star wars legos but someone lost my PS3 controller (probably one of my twin daughters walked off with it).

 

Can you really blame them though? I mean the Console version is going to outsell the PC version 3:1, at least 2:1. Dont get me wrong I wish the PC version was a little more polished but I get the decision to focus on consoles. Frankly if my work situation wasnt what it was, I'd probably game more often on consoles just because its easier (although not as pretty...)

As I understand it more of the issues are with ATI drivers. Apparently Nvidia got theirs cleaned up sooner. So...if you have the latest drivers installed the Tech 5 engine is supposed to do a really good job of scaling the game to run on your system. So I would guess that the game will run on your system...just might not look as pretty as on some newer rigs.

That being said, I'd save my money if I was you. I got it on steam and split the cost with my brother and still feel like I got ripped off. The game is just boring.

Wait a few days and get Arkham City...reviews are over the top for that game everywhere I look! Plus it looks pretty too! Although, not as pretty as Rage...
