I have an m17x r3 I dont know what to upgrade. I have 250 gb of space only so was thinking of buying a hardrive to expand that space. I dont know if I should dbuy an SSD to speed up the boot or a 7200 rpm 1 tera. Should I buy the 8gb kingston hyper x cuz i only have the standard 4gb ram 1333.

I want to upgrade one component what would be the best choice?

I'd do an SSD first. This will be your most worth while upgrade

4 gigs of ram is still good for most things...you can upgrade that anytime

well what you can do, is buy an SSD for speed, and relegate the 250gb drive to being a data hard drive. if all your doing is gaming, 4 gigs should be enough. hope this helps a bit :)

Edit: Slickdude beat me to it

    whats your price range?

something like this might be better because the extra space will allow you to install a few programs as well as the OS. I'm not an SSD expert so you prob better off getting the advice from someone who actually has one.

the one you posted is the C300 which is the previous model to the M4

The M4 will fit...many people like it on this forum.

There was a sale recently (as in a few days ago) on newegg for the 128 gig M4 for $179.99 shipped, I don't know if its still available

PS...if you're buying it for your M17x R3, get it without the transfer kit and you will save a few bucks

That really is up to you to decide. 64 gigs is good for windows and several apps.

If you feel you don't need more, then go for it.

i find that with 128 gigs, it gives me a lot more freedom to install more on the ssd and i don't worry as much about what i install on it. A modern game now is what? 8-10 gigs installed? maybe more?

I'd definitely go for an SSD upgrade aswell.

Ocz, Corsair and Crucial has some great SSDs, cannot recommend any special production-model, but i've heard that the larger the SSD is, the faster it will be.
(Because of some dual-channel thing that applies for the NAND-chips in it..).
Also, do some real research on the type you're thinking about buying, some SSDs nowa'days have rumours for losing / deleting stuff that is on them, and don't forget to get an SSD which has good read AND write speed!

Last thing i would recommend you to do, is to NOT contact Dell about it.. They're only selling -expensive SSDs that can be otbained for a far less price than what they offer them for.

Also, I'm not quiet shure on this, but isn't the mounting-brackets for the R3 made to hold 2,5" discs? If so, look for SSDs that are 2,5" in size..

    - Scott.

Definitely SSD. Best bang for the buck.
    You WILL notice the difference.
With the RAM upgrade, the only way you'll see a slight difference is by running benchmarks.
No real-world everyday noticable performance increase, even in games.

If you're willing to cough up some more $$, I would recommend an SF-2281 based SSD like Patriot Wildfire 120GB. Make sure to upgrade the FW to 3.3.2. on SandForce based controllers.
