hi guys my laptop has been randomly freezing over the past weeks it only ever happens around 1-30 mins after start up the computer craws to a stop mouse keyboard don't work nothing forcing me to do a hard stop ( holding power button) i tried to fix the issue by a number of ways the first suspect was ram i have run several ram testing programs the ram i have been using is brand new but this problem was happening before my new ram its in my sig btw so its not the issue heres a list of recent changes with my system
NEW MOBO
NEW GPU GTX 580( clean install of drivers preformed running 306.23)
i have tried everything to try and fix this i have scared the internet for anyone with similar issues but all the solutions they had never worked ANY HELP would be great

It could be your SSD (assuming you have one).
-
unfortunately i dont have one so it cant be that there's no way of logging the crashes either because it so random
-
it just happened again 2 mins ago when i was loading a Microsoft word document

Download Comodo Cleaning Essentials x64>run Kill Switch>suspicious right click search online depending on results go to Norton or Malwarebytes forums post thread there you'll find specific instructions.
Kill Switch is a better alternative to windows task manager.

will give it ago now thanks the problem has got a lot worse today around 20+ freezes i am currently switching out ram sticks in different slots to see if that's the issue
-
OK just give the software tool a go there's nothing suspicious there and the things that are marked unknown are things like alienware on screen display and alien fx controller so i dont know where to go from here but it looks like the issue has disappeared for now as i currently have 1 4gb stick in the first sodimm slot and no freezing at all fingers cross if this is the case the other sodimm slot must be broke or something will have to phone dell tomorrow

assuming you tried each mem and it is still ok with one maybe try the other pair of sockets? A pain to get to but one in each as well might give you some clue? As you say it looks like a call to dell but the more you can try out the better chance of ending up with a result
Good Luck! -
Did you ever run PSA (Pre-boot Systems Assessment)? It's when you hit F12 at startup and select Diagnostics from the startup options.
-
hi figured its out not a ram issue at all but an integrated gpu issue the issue only ever occurs when not running the gtx 580 if i have a game running in the background the computer will never freeze but if gpu usage is low it will hand it over to the Intel card and it freezes on the phone to dell now
-
already tried no issues its actually an integrated gpu issue and have now patched a fix sort eg running a game in the background so it doesn't switch to in igpu. LOL

That's a strange one! What did they say?
I'm just glad that I do not have access to the iGPU on mine. I see so many issues with switching for both AMD and NV I think the first thing I would do is disable it for good. I believe dell have added this ability into the latest BIOS releases so no need for an unlocked BIOS any more
-
unfortunately i couldn't get hold of a tech they were busy all night so will have to try tomorrow. it is very strange but my last issue with this laptop was also with integrated graphics so the faults are matching up i must need a new cpu thank god i just took out another 1 year warranty on it

Ask for a replacement this is the second time Dell failed, I was writing that you could add the argument http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/691187-m17x-r3-a12-bios-2.html#post8883815 but had to leave post, now you mention it.
