    So I just got my 3D M17x R3 with 580M!. Clean install. Flashed to A08. Installed 280.26. Fired up Black Ops. I'm expecting smooth sailing.

    1080p 3D on
    FPS = 20 to 30. often 15 - 18. Terrible.
    Without 3D = 40 to 91.

    Always 18 - 30 even on 1600x900 or even 1280x720. Very unplayable really. 3D is apparently so demanding on the hardware. 580M is the best Nvidia card out there. Black Ops been out for a year. I just expected it shouldn't be a problem for this card. Now I'm really starting to wonder if I should go the 6990M route. Sure the screen is nice. Watching 3D movies on the laptop was an awesome experience. It all depends on the source file but I paid a premium for 3D gaming. It seems like the hardware needs to be more powerful for smooth 3D sailing. Maybe it will be fine two or three generations down the line.

    Black Ops is like one pf the less demanding games that I have. So it doesn't seem like I will be enjoying 3D gaming at all. Should I keep this laptop for the occasional 3D movies and 120hz screen? Is there any benefit to the 120hz screen compared to the 60hz other than the brightness? I just feel a sense of disappointment and the first thought that comes to mind is to change the laptop. Need some different perspective. Keep it or no? Nay or Yay?

    You do realize 3D often requires near double the processing power to run in games versus if it was off - then on top of that it "halves" (not technically, but that's the resulting effect) your framerate for the sole purpose of displaying the double frames needed for 3D.

    You did do your research before buying the GTX 580m with the intention of using it for solely 3D, right?

    absolutely correct. I would go so far as saying that 3d on a laptop is pretty much a gimmick. You just don't have the horse power to do it right.

    On a desktop, i wouldn't do 3d on less than 2 x 560ti's...probably SLI 570's would be better

    To add to that, the only mobile solutions that are suitable for 3D of any kind are dual GTX 580m's in a N18x, or Clevo X7200 - neither of which have a 3D screen to my knowledge :(

    he, imagine all those poor guys who went 3D with gtx460m/gtx560m. Though you are right, its obvious that these cards just dont have enough horsepower to run 3D in latest games. Heck you play Crysis 2 on hd6990m with like 30fps (on max details fhd) and gtx580m is just slightly ahead, so you really cant expect to play games (even slightly less demanding) in 3D with reasonable FPS.

    on the other hand, lowering the resolution should provide more FPS

    i MOST certainly didnt get this system for the 3D gaming....But 3D content watching is nice. However in terms of non 3D gaming, i dont think many can complain...Keeping up with hardware is like chasing a sausage at the end of the pole tied to your neck. Its been like that for a reason. profit and MORE PROFIT.
    If I were to suggest a change, it would be this : A law that states New technology should have a minimum of " so " and " so " percentage beyond the existing technology in order to be marketable. With certain discretions any thing lesser than that should not be allowed to released because it merely cheats the hopeful masses. But we the humans are terribly trained to be impatient in technological advances. Just look at the progress of any mac machines or Iphone. How large is the leap actually? Look at the latest processors released by intel. What was this refresh all about? lesser than peanuts! But when a buyer sees i7 2820 ----> i7 2860 its like " WOW " i must get the extra 300mhz

    There could be something wrong with your card, I've done multiple benchmark checks and with the 580M at 1080p "ultra" settings, it runs around 80FPS so when 3D is active you should get around 40FPS, not the 20-30 you are experiencing. As a little tip when it comes to 3D gaming, you can disable all AA as it apparently makes very little difference. I've also read that gaming in 3D at 720p is just as good as 1080p which will be useful for the more demanding games. Have you considered removing the throttle from the card and tried an overclock?

    3D gaming won't halve your framerate. It will usually quarter it.
