Device Manager shows an Nvidia 680m. WOOHOO

Thanks for all the help guys.

Just to verify, can I go back into my BIOS now and re-enable IGPU as an option or is it best to leave it off? Frankly I don't think I've EVER used it except when troubleshooting if that matters.

unfortunately i haven't seen anyone get the intel graphics to work with the 680M yet.

That's great news! Can't comment on the iGPU as I don't have it but I have read some R3 owners have had to do this to get the 680 to work correctly

Whenever i try to re-enable IGPU (with SG) it freezes at POST and obviously with PEG, its bricks.

Give it a shot with SG, but be prepared to remove you GPU and turn it off again if it fails. thats what i have to do.

Okay I'm thinking I will just leave it as it is. It boots and works. Thanks again for all of the help guys. Off to leave feedback for Lannbot, he comes through again as always.

Tried to rep all of you but it only let me get 2 of you, apparently I've given out too much in 24 hours...............

I believe it's from a 580 but not positive, I bought the card from Lannbot and he set it up with the heatsink already assembled and pasted for me. I'm look at HWinfo right now and it's idling at 34C.........now if I could just cool the damned 2920 off.........I repasted today with IC Diamond and it's still idling at 42C.

Nah, don't re-enable the iGPU! It will conflict with the 680m. The R3 has issues with the switchable graphics using the 680m. You may soft brick your system.

There you have it then, I'll leave it off. Going to try and get some baseline numbers off of this thing and see how it compares to the 6990 I had in it.

Yeah, it and the 580m. It's something to do with the 3D hardware/firmware built into the R3's motherboard. Even though you don't have the 3D LCD, the hardware is still there on the motherboard and I've been told it conflicts because something about the 580m/680m verifies with the motherboard that it's 3D-certified at POST but the iGPU then causes a problem cause it is not 3D. The rest of the explanation was just white noise to me after that. In any rate, don't re-enable the iGPU.

Yeah it's staying off. Don't have any stock comparison numbers since I had the 2920 OC'd to 4.2Ghz when I made my last 3d runs but here are some scores and temps: (2920 is still too damned hot even after the IC Diamond repaste. )

    3D-06: 23,697 3dMarks
    GPU Temp: 53c
    CPU Temp: 83c

    3d-11: 6108 3dMarks
    GPU Temp: 55c
    CPU Temp: 81c

    Vantage: 22,147 3dMarks
    GPU Temp: 59c
    CPU Temp: 90C (!!!!!)

    Heaven: 1311 score / 52FPS
    GPU Temp: 68c
    CPU Temp: 57c

I am thinking (hoping) Heaven is most like playing a normal game and should represent what I should typically see in gaming.

I'd say so, it's all about tessellation and GPU features, very little CPU usage on a card with built-in physics :D

That's good to know. Are there any settings I should specifically adjust in the Nvidia control panel for this thing or are the defaults good for gaming with games like Far Cry 3, BF 3 etc.....?

haven't made the jump to a 680 myself (yet) but from what I read just crank up the in-game settings - and I like to set the power mode in the NV control panel to max performance. It does run a little warmer in day-to-day use but no mode switching in games if the power consumption is low.

As you now have the latest driver you will have profiles built in for those games and can 'play' with individual games' settings rather then changing global settings :)

Hmmm, not seeing a "power mode", just an area that says I can adjust a slider for quality or performance. Also don't see anything in there about profiles. I'll have to explore around some more.

Yup I found it, thanks! Now I just have to wait for a good enough connection so I can get to Steam and transfer my games to this computer via Backup. Have nothing on here that's going to even remotely stress this card. lol

Cool, I feel your pain with that 20th Century DL speed.

Just an FYI, if you update to a later driver and do the clean install you loose any settings you have made in the driver panel. I've started to use the upgrade option lately and for me it has worked fine :)

Good to know, thanks. Wondering too, if I update the driver down the road, am I going to have to go through the 'Modded Inf' thing again as well?

Probably. Always worth trying the 'vanilla' release first. Only the last two releases from Nvidia worked with my 675.

On my R3, once I had used a modded inf I always needed one - even for the dell published drivers. Had to completely remove the card (deleted the device and let it re-detect) to get the dell ones to work again :(

    LOL

And to think, one of the reasons I wanted a 680 so badly was to get away from complicated driver installs as is typical with the AMD cards.

It's not too bad though with laptopvideo2go keeping on top of ALL the releases, even versions you don't see on the NV site.

If you rename the inf file you saved I'm sure you will see it had put .txt at the end, so it's easy enough to replace one file and away you go, once you've done it a couple of times ;)

Oh man Slim, sorry for the trouble LOL. I should start mentioning to people that they need the modded .inf in order to get these to work in the last gen machines. I'm glad you got it to work and I'm gonna rep all these awesome members for helping you out when my lazy butt was sleepin' lol.

EDIT: LOL gave too much rep out, will continue tomorrow!

Thanks Lann, these guys were great. I have the file saved on my thumb drive along with a ton of other junk (which means I'll never find it when I need it most likely) so hopefully I'll be okay. I'm not one for upgrading each time a new driver comes out anyway, guess it's habit from the sheer terror I got each time I did my AMD updates, never knowing if it was a 5 minute or 5 hour job. lol

It's easy to edit, There are twelve entries divided into three groups ( nvdm.inf Dell exclusive); other .inf four groups.

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0490.1028% = Section208, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0 = GTX 680M
    0490 = M17XR3
    1028% = Dell

There's no need to edit the first group, second and third are the install paths, the forth (bottom) is the ID you'll see in device manager: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028.

    Hope it helps.

To avoid the no compatible device found dialog, unzip driver to desktop with 7-Zip copy and replace nvdm.inf or just edit it; install with extracted setup.exe That's the way I do it, when possible I'll upload the .inf with each driver release, it's important as many fixes are included (some bugs introduced :D) for the newest games.

Unfortunately that's all Greek to me. I am software illiterate in the worst way. Generally with some guidance from folks like I had in this case I can find a way to muddle my way through it but to be quite honest, I had no idea what I was doing when I opened the file in notepad and copied over everything in there, I just figured it couldn't hurt. lol
