ITX machines worth building do not fit within weight constraints of international travel. 20 pounds or there abouts (depending on airline) is the limit. I dont need to build an ITX, I already have a Ranger, which fulfills its purpose just fine. Building another machine to replace a machine that already checks literally ALL the boxes is asinine.
This isnt a justification thread, or even a comparison thread. its a build log.

From my POV, it looked like your Ranger was just sitting in the house, and you wanted it for size constraints, which at that point a ITX box would destroy in price to performance and performance alone. I did not realize you were planning to take it international, kudos with that and I hope it all works out, I was merely inquiring that, if it's stationary all the time, why not build something better value?

A question posed to nearly everyone with a DTR, and it does get kind of annoying after a while.
I may build a desktop in the future, but for now laptops are more than comparable. When my CPU is no longer to push the GPU I can OC it.
I got this machine when I really didnt have money for anything greater, the point was to build into it over time, which I have. RTX 5000 or P5200 would complete it and when that happens Ill keep using this machine until it doesnt suit the purpose anymore, by then ill likely have a 3950x or w/e the equivalence is. For now, I am not limiting myself to a desktop, as I would have to sell at a serious loss when I go, and that would all be counter intuitive. -
I have switched to laptops (specifically DTRs) for a long time now. I do not see myself building a desktop anytime soon as long as there are laptops that can perform within desktop power.
Also I am kind of the person that likes to customize and go all out. To me a desktop from today would be a X299 with 18-Core CPU or AMD Threadripper 3rd Gen with 64 Core CPU with RTX Titan GPU etc. You see already it wouldn't be any cheaper than my laptop lol
Also I take my laptop many places, having a desktop would destroy that ability. Being able to throw in my laptop + charger into my backpack in 5 seconds and go anywhere is very convenient.
I actually do have a desktop at home, but it's purpose is a server (i7 5820K 6-core, 16GB RAM, GTX 980 LOL)
I actually have too many laptops too lol
Area-51m (Gaming laptop/Everyday machine)
M18xR2 (Workstation/Secondary Machine, used for HDMI IN sometimes on travel)
M4800 (This will have its purpose once I actually receive it)
MacBook Pro 2013 Retina (macOS / Video/Audio Editing machine)
E7240 (looking to sell this one soon) -
Making preparations for modifications to take place next week during the holiday.
If I cant do it myself then I will hopefully get someone else with the appropriate skills to do it on my behalf.

Replacement N173HHE-G32 has arrived and Ill have that reinstalled next week.
Also I will attempt to bend some heatpipes to better cool the VRMs on the 1070.Last edited: Nov 23, 2019 -

This is the recent culmination of my work on this Ranger.
Does anyone know how to bypass the 120w power limit on this laptop? I was able to draw 170w for a short while until the built in limit kicked in. Maybe a shunt mod to fool the EC or something of the like?
I have hit 4.3Ghz on the CPU. I could probably do 4.5Ghz but my lapping sucks so I have two hot cores, however the heatsink overall I would say is a success.
4.2Ghz and my temps dont really breach 75c on full load. Gaming tends to be less so.
1070 has been tuned for 1750c/+500m @ .825w as to stay within the 120w limit.Hirosake likes this. -
Today after work I will check the BIOS to see if there is anything I can disable as far as power limits for the GPU be it AC Adapter or something more involved. Hopefully it would be something simple.
I also ordered a second 12v fan for the GPU side, while cooling may or may not be improved, its much quieter overall even at max fan speed. The main goal however is to have both fans controlled and powered externally. Then I would have 2 native fan ports and could mount the fans in other desired locations.
With this in mind I will add 1 fan directly atop the CPU, as I have aluminum heat exchangers extended to that area as well that currently have no airflow. I would then have 2 fans dedicated to the CPU.
Then as for the GPU fan I would dedicate that to the HDD slot as seen here in the forums and other places of the net. This would be to directly cool the VRMs and make sure they dont overheat, which is a potential issue with the VRM layout of the MSI 1070, especially when I am trying to pull 150w+ out of the 1070. Even if I cant push that much watts to the card, it should aid in reducing core temps a few degrees.
In short,
2x 120mm fans
2x 12v fans powered externally
2x 5v fans powered natively with extended cables for re-positioning. -
I also have some power chokes or vrms that currently arent heatsinked on the back of the 1070, going to get that covered soon. 0.5/1.0/1.5/2.0mm pads on order to rectify that.Last edited: Dec 30, 2019uugui shi likes this. -

Trying to break 20k!
I disabled some things in the BIOS related to power savings, some were from a bygone era, some could be applied here but just in case I disabled them.
Adapter warnings being among them.
Pushed 132w TDP on that latest run. Going to run a couple of games just to make sure it wasnt a fluke.EepoSaurus, Hirosake, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Also, disable all services that are not absolutely essential for Windows to run. That will probably add at least 500 points. This nifty utility helps make that extra easy. https://www.sordum.org/8637/easy-service-optimizer-v1-2/ -
Also looks like its that EC hitting me holding the GPU back. Anytime I sustain 135+ TDP laptop shuts down.
This will be my rock solid 24/7 regular use score

Now back to running my other mods once the parts arrive. Got another 25mm GPU fan coming, and ill use the wire I have to install 2 additional fans. One for the GPU vrms and the next is a second CPU fan.
I plan to get a few copies of LTSC, ill put in more time with benchmarks after that. This is just a vanilla Win10 Pro x64
Just noticed I took the crown for the Ranger in 3dmark Firestrikehappy me

Debating on getting this.

Pump is built into the radiator, so the contact plate is low profile, and would actually be a flat surface, compared to my shoddy lapping.
14c differential kills my 4.4Ghz attempts
Since I am hitting the limit on the GPU side, I want to get the most out of the CPU side. Even at 130w, the system doesnt panic and shut down, only after passing 100c, leads me to think its possible to get higher clocks out of the 4930mx if willing to use alternative methods for cooling.
EDIT:
Purchased it for science.Last edited: Jan 1, 2020 -
Did this arrive yet?
Got pics?
How is it powered?
I saw a youtube from techlinus has cpu AND gpu heatsinks with radiator in single loop.
Maybe worth a try doing something similar if you can get second heatsink for gpu?!?! -
Yeah I got it but the block was much too large to mount anywhere without cutting up the blocks mount.
I decided to return it, as I was having thoughts about getting an AM4/Navi desktop in a TU 150Hirosake likes this. -
I still like the idea
todo list:
1. understand women
2. water cooled laptop
3. splice chlorophyll into entire human population dna. Eradicate racism (everyone green), eradicate hunger (eat sunlight), eradicate global warming (all fart O2)MagicMike likes this. -
One can never eliminate racism as its not a logical point of view to begin with, someone will be lighter shades than others.
Water cooled can be done, its been done in many others, just thought I might be able to get away with using a CLC lol
Also without food we lose much of what makes us differ and congregate into other groups.
As for the first, I dont understand myself so I wont pretend to understand much else anyways.Hirosake likes this. -

Im good mate but thanks! Your card has been stellar over the time I have used it though.
Need to find it a new home -
@Rengsey R. H. Jr.
Im a little curious.....can you please point me toward a picture of the water cooler of which you speak?
I very much like this idea...a self contained..no external stuff

Its the idea I like....just what I see in the pic I can source most parts from china and play around with it.
start bending some pipes and soldering.
Give up odd bay and see what temps can be achieved.
But no need to reinvent the wheel...if other stuff is around it might be adapted to suit...just curious -
Most people create their own copper tubing and run them through an external radiator or run through the built in radiators or both.

This setup was too advanced for its time. It had chipset , cpu , and mxm sli water cooling setup ..Hirosake likes this. -
There is also this dead project:
Water cooled Alienware laptop, by Asetek, never came to the market..
EDIT: I see it was already mentioned..
It is possible to almost replicate such a system, but at what cost? Is it indeed "profitable" to put 1k+$ in work and parts into a quad-core system that can't be upgraded no more? Even a limited six core 8th gen laptop runs circles around it..Last edited: Jan 20, 2020Hirosake and Rengsey R. H. Jr. like this. -
It can be done....now I just need to know if i should bother doing it.
Thank you Gents -

@TheReciever
Hi...I have a quick question for you.......4930mx
I got one cheap and tried to install it....got 7 error beeps.
I did nvram reset...same
even no RAM installed still get 7 beeps.......
so...is there anything i have to set in BIOS before slotting cpu in or is it just plug in and BIOS resets itself to mx chip?
Thank you
EDIT: sorry its A14+ unlocked biosLast edited by a moderator: Feb 15, 2020 -
Plug and play
If it doesnt want to boot might be issue with RAM or the CPU is dead. -
Yeah I thought so
It was 7 beeps even with no ram sticks inserted.
Ok thank you. I will send it back.
-
I will put up my listings tomorrow, I really need to get rid of my hardware lol
-
Thanks anyway...It wasnt a planned upgrade just fell in my lap.
Im saving for a new pc..I will keep my ranger for a backup -
-
Got my listings up. Still need to make another for the Barebones / chassis, just not sure how to price it lol
