    Not so much a redesign but the introduction of a bit more copper. See here:

    If I am correct there are 3 heatpipes instead of 2. I think Dell will send this new heatsink model with the 6990m cards too.

    There have always been 3 heat pipes as far as I know. But I do agree with your latter statement that the new heatsink will probably come with the 6990m too. Hopefully cooling will be up to scratch. The 580m can be overvolted according to tests done in the Clevo forums and at mvktech. Clocks can hit a desktop 560 Ti.

    just be carefull about your expectations, it may not work fully with the system if it doesn't have the Dell subsystem Bus id's and may not support 3D, it is my belief that it must be recognised by the system bios to work properly......................I could be wrong - just my opinion

    ^^That is very likely. There may be not just bios differences but also hardware differences. For example even when flashed with the Dell vbios, the Clevo 6970m doesn't allow auto fan control. It is very likely that a non-Dell 580m won't have 3D support either.

    well i asked someone at dell chat support and they say that any gtx 580m will work including the 3D on a 120Hz laptop screen on the m17x r3 3D they said it wont be any difference getting a gtx580m elsewhere. Hopefully that is correct but i have yet to find somewhere that sells the heat sink as its different to the gtx 460m card one. I cant buy from dell usa as i am in the uk and dell uk dont sell the parts if anyone knows where to get the heat sink let me know thanks

    We'll have to wait and see if someone wants to try it out. Maybe one of the Clevo resellers can help out, lend/loan the card just for info purposes.

    Here's your problem. Dell Support will do anything - including straight out lie to you - to get you to spend money.

    yea maybe is best to wait until someone has tested a gtx 580m non-dell version in a m17x r3 3d to see if it works as its a waste of money if they dont work 100%

    Thanks for the pic, I didn't want to disassemble mine because it is very hard to get the back cover properly aligned so it can be screwed back on.

    They added more copper to the heatsink itself. I wonder what the temp difference will be.

    btw, this is no redesign but the "old" 460M memory-heatsink (which also fits the 580M ofc).

    dell just messed this up and shipped the first batch of 580M with those 6990M memory-heatsinks.

    @vginside, do you have a large thermal pad that goes along the other exposes memory chips?

    @mm2x those are called backplates.

    What are the odds Dell put this in a recently ordered M17x, or will I need to get one on my own and install it?

    Only one way to find out: take out the GPU and inspect the back :)

    Haha, that isn't worth it. I think my approach will just be to run the thing hard and see if it has issues. If not, then I don't care what heatsink it has.
