The 480M was never an option for the M17x R3.
    The 580M is.

Well it depends on what do you mean by 'better'.
All I'm saying is that the 480M is not officially supported for the M17x R3.

    Google and download MSI Afterburner.

Move core clock slider 20MHz or so up.

Run intensive games for at least an hour. If stable*, increase another 20MHz, and retest. Keep doing this until:

    a) Your card becomes unstable (in which case you back of 10MHz and try again).
    b) Your card's temperatures exceed 90°C in-game.

*Stable means that you don't have any artifacting, or performance drops from voltage instability, or thermal throttling.

I would stay away from gtx480m as it was an early release and got some heating issues. In addition, it is just barely more powerful than the 560m due to its very low clocks...

Try to overclock your 560m as we all know it has a very good o/cing capability and you will have better performance than the 480m itself.

But If you want a high end performance card, go for 580m or 6990m, nothing else.

I hope you're not trolling. Read my post again. Increase core clock - and core clock only - by 10-20HMz, and test each time. Simply jamming everything up as high as it will go will fry things.

    Okay.. now i understood..
sorry if my question is annoying but what is memory clock? and wat will happen if i increase that also?
coz i hv tested stability with furmark and when my temp up to 78celcius, it becomes lagg.. but when i lifted my laptop, the temp goes down.. obviously i need a cooling fan right?

can u guys tell me the diff between core clock, shader clock and memory clock? iam so noob in this and iam trying to learn 1 by 1 about OC-ing laptop :(. sorry if i annoy u guys

and p/s, recently when i played games like crysis 2, i experienced lagg for about 1min. then it returns to normal.thennn it happens again n again.. it spoiled my mood.. :(

    Throttling!
Hi, I also recently got a R3 and found the following useful when attemting overclocking:
The 580M has 4 clock settings and the chip will use a different clock depending on temperature and load (called throttling). they are referred to as P0, P1, P8, and P12. P0 and P1 are all you need to be working with P0 being the fastest.
I had a lot of problems with P1 kicking in at 'normal' settings in farcry 2 until I applied the latest BIOS on the dell site.
Afterburner will only overclock P0 but I use it for the on-screen monitoring so I can see when P1 is applied (clock drops), and temperature.
Nvidia Inspector is the only program I have found that can work with ALL the different clock states, and you can create shortcuts (and put them in startup) to apply automatically at startup.
The only game I have used so far that applies the throttling is Bioshock 2. This game steps down to P1 when the menus are active and steps back up in-game - cool! Currently running 675/725 at 65 degrees without issue and all options cranked up.
PS, If you get problems with some games crashing/blue screen/'NV... has stopped responding', force DX9 as this is related to hardware access in DX10/11 (very long story but basically Nvidia and MS are pointing at each other and we the punters are are suffering, looks to me like it's M$ since ATI users also get this problem.)

Unforunately you won't be able to play all games in ultra with a mere 560M BUT play in mostly high settings and 900p will be well handled by this GPU.

Regarding o/cing, I can just advise you to use NVInspector, set your clocks, test them and when you are happy with it, just create a shortcut of these settings and copy it into your Start folder, that's it :)

M17x R3 can come with different GPU, it depends which GPU you customize with.
The price for M17x R3 with GTX560M is RM 8,141, if you upgrade to GTX580M, it will be RM 9,600.
Its an RM 1,459.00 upgrade from GTX560M to GTX580M.
There's also got AMD HD6870M, HD6990M option as well.

Price quoted from Dell MY Online.

the 480m is not better than the 560m...in fact they are very close in performance.

the 580m though is significantly better than either the 480m or 560m

When i say significantly, i mean like 30-50% better depending on application

I used MSI afterburner to OC .. currently iam satisfied but when my gpu temp up to 78 celcius, it becomes lagg until it returns to 61celsius.. do u have any idea why i can only reach up to 78 celcius only?

and most of the game i can play in high..in st row the third i can play ultra.. but bf3 and crysis 2 i cant.. a bit laggy.. :( .. do i hve to change to 580m to be able to play ultra in all games?? and incoming games as well? coz i hv been planning to use this laptop for a lifetime since it has awesome specs..

Thats freaking expensive =.= .. i bought rm7500 with 560m.. got ppl offered me 480m but iam quite not sure about that..so i picked 560m one.. whew. did i do the right thing? iam nt very good in laptops..trying to learn.. humphmmmm

you're throttling. The nvidia cards throttle at two points...a power throttle at 67c and a thermal throttle at 77c. The performance severely pulls back at these points.

You will need to apply a throttling fix like this one:

Ohh.. umm sorry iam kinda new to forum things.
but i didnt mean to spam or anything..

P/s guys, may i know what is throttling means for graphic cards?

Yes, the GTX 580M does support 3D Vision (an NVIDIA technology)... you need a 120MHz display. If you have a 120MHz LCD television, that should work.
afifboy, that's ok friend. Everyone was new at this at one point in time. No worries... :)

I closed one of the threads you created with a link to this one, and merged the other with this larger thread. No need to have multiple threads covering essentially the same topics.

Instead of adding a new post for a PS comment immediately following a previous post, simply click the edit button and add new information. I merged the quoted post above with the quoted post below.

Throttling means the clock speeds are slowing down. It's a term that can be applied to CPU or GPU. Probably the most common cause of throttling is temperatures. When used properly by the manufacturer, throttling is a good thing because it keeps your hardware from being destroyed. When it is not properly implemented, it simply causes poor performance.

afi, throttling means that the performance of nvidia cards pulls back when it hits certain thresholds.

There are two levels of throttle in nvidia cards. The first one is a power throttle at 67c. Your clocks will drop to slightly reduced speeds. This affects performance, but not severely as:

The next throttle is a thermal throttle when you hit 77-78c so when your temp hits those levels, your performance literally drops like a stone until temps are reduced. This is what you are experiencing
