So i reinstalled windows 7 64bit today and now the internet won't work. I used my brother's computer to download the drivers off dells website and have tried all the wireless drivers. I keep on getting the same message : The software package cannot be installed on your system. The setup application will exit. also tried plugging in the ethernet cord and it doesnt even recognize that. I reinstalled windows a month ago without any problems.

    anyone know what's going on?

First of all whats your system specs? Have you tried installing off the CD that came with your machine? I know that's usually not whats recommended, but it might be worth a try to get your wireless/eithernet port to work. Hope this helps! :)

Agreed, select update drivers for the wireless and ethernet devices in the list, and point the update installer to the Alienware CD that came with your system. That should contain some sort of generic drivers for those devices at the very least.

I just moved not long ago. Guess I'd better start digging for that CD!

You should be able to check on the Dell site with your service tag what is installed in your PC. Then you can get the right drivers for it.

    Choose your own country though,

OP - did you install the Atheros Controller driver or did you miss that one?

And the Dell drivers associated with your service tag wouldn't install? That's not a good sign.

It would be worth checking this. Sometimes if it doesn't find the ethernet controller it won't install the wireless driver correctly.

You didn't upgrade or change out the wifi card to a different brand?

Look under the Details tab in the Wifi card's device properties (in Device Manager). Select Hardware IDs from the dropdown list, the copy and paste the first line of info into your next post. Should look something like this: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_422B&SUBSYS_11218086&REV_35

With this info, we can better identify your brand and model of wifi card.

i did not upgrade or change it. I went to device manager and at first it only listed the ethernet and the bluetooth, then i hit show hidden devices and all these show up. Dont know where to find hardware ids.

It's under Other Devices, the Network Controller.
