    Am I missing a small setting somewhere or could there be another reason?

    I freely admit that I have NO IDEA where to go to set it up and make it work, it's just always done so.

    Open WMP>play music>switch to now playing (right corner)>right click>visualizations>AlienWare AlienFX.

    To configure it, right click again>more options>Plug-ins>select AlienWare AlienFX>properties and customize it.

    there is also a guide to make it work in itunes, but it messes up my keyboard scheme everytime I exit out of the program. :(
