"You can’t do that, Dell doesn’t have the policy. Sorry"

    Is this true?

My understanding (folks please correct me), is that the only way to do this is to return the laptop (possibly paying a restocking fee depending on the length of time you've had it), and then ordering a new machine with the new GPU's.

    Sorry :(

No idea, but if you buy the new card I see no reason why they wouldn't do it. If you want to return the "old" card to save money I guess it won't work.

But you can also simply return your whole system if you're unhappy... you're still within the return period I guess.

I just received my system yesterday with the 6970, i would like to get the 6990 but its not available anyway in Ireland, I had a small problem with my laptop that the power button had a loose wire and i couldn't power it on when it arrived but I fixed that and now I got a bluescreen last night but I think it was because of the ati driver so if there is no more problems i wont return it. Otherwise its going back and I dont know if im getting another alienware.

Sell it and place a new order or buy one of ebay. Seems clevo cards work in our Alienware's.

You could also buy the 6970m card from Dell, 389 dollars, saw this number popping up in a topic somewhere. The 6990m cost just a little more.

Hmm I see. Well I am a bit disappointed. I was pretty sure it was as easy as a swap. If that is not the case, then I will just wait until next year and sell mine on eBay or here for a few hundred and then buy the new one from Dell.

And I cannot return it because this is my 3rd one and is finally working without issues. I just that thought since this is my 3rd one--and it definitely should not be--and because I haven't had this thing working for more than 2 weeks, that I should be entitled to something like this.

I guess not? Thanks for the responses.

Ow I see you already have the 6970m, so you want the 6990m.

The only option is to sell it or buy the card from Dell/ebay.

Unfortunately the Clevo 6990 card is not available "yet", but I would think it would be compatible when it's available. Granted it might not be worth the cost to upgrade, but you could buy it and then sell your 6970, as I'd think there is still a pretty good market for those.

    Just some other thoughts

Where did you get that # from? I called dell and got the quote emailed to me.

They wanted $600 bucks for the 6970m! Got the quote a month ago. I wanted to pay for it with my dell business credit, they said no. Bummer, stuck with the 6870 atm.

Yikes $614.16 for a single 6970?, I just got two of them for not much more then that. Granted I ordered from a member here on the forums and they are Clevo cards, but he had them for a much better deal then that.

So you figure if Dell charges $800 = it would be $200 a year for the warranty on the card including the card itself (4 year warranty).

I should of waited till the 5X0 to come out for the 3D model...lol.

What done is done. Yes I can exchange it but with all the refunds and crap I have been going through with Dell - I think I will just either leave it at the 460 or or start saving for the 580.

IF possible return it and re-order.

Seems like alot of people are unhappy with cards they ordered but do not want to deal with the refund re-order hassle.

IMHO, its not the hassle of re-ordering, its the wait time of getting the money back so you can re-order and hoping they don't "forget" to refund one of your cards in the process.

Granted 15 days isn't that much, but you need to figure that, plus the ordering time (another 2 weeks+) and you are pretty much waiting a month for the laptop.
