Hi guys, just got a new R3 and I've repasted it with mx-4. Problem is it idles at 64-66 degrees and load temps are 78 degrees with fan on normal speed, 74 with high fan setting.

I'm happy with the load temperature but the idle temperature actually got worst because before I repaste it was sitting at 61-63 degrees.

I'm planning to open the laptop up again and add a little dab more of mx-4 and see it that helps, but for other 6970m owners what idle/load temps should I aim for? I will like to get the best cooling so I can overclock the card more. I'm hitting 850/1100 stable right now, is there any more room for improvement? Thanks!

With MX-4 or MX-2 I always just put a large amount on there in a line from one side of the die to the other. When you tighten down the excess is squeezed out and you get perfect coverage. Since it is non-conductive the extra won't hurt anything, and you guarantee yourself 100% coverage with no air bubbles.

Your only a bit higher than me. Mine is floating at 58C with stock paste. Try propping the laptop on a book. It's what I do and I never go past 78C except in the summer when the AC's broken.

    Using MX-4 too,applied the manual spreading method,idle temps at low 50s,max temp under load 76 degrees.Many ways to apply paste,pea dot,line,cross,manual spreading...etc,experiment.

use pea if square, line/rice if rectangle is my general rule.

cross/manual spreading usually result in airpockets for me, resulting in higher temps. the tricky bit is using the right amount.

I really want to fix the idle temperature because right now the fans go on every minute or so to cool the card and it is annoying. Before the fans never go on and the laptop is completely silent.

The load temperatures in SC2 is 70, furmark is 74, but it idles at 62-66 just sitting on desktop.

Will updating drivers help? This is my first laptop with integrated/discrete GPU and I'm wondering if I just go on AMD's website to download the latest CCC (11.12?) or I need to use alienware/dell exclusive drivers? Thanks

Have you tried propping the laptop on a book or elevating it so it gains better airflow?
