Hi all. I'm new to these forums. Hopefully someone on here can help me out. I have an M17x..it was a replacement for the dreaded XPS 17" laptop. Anyhow, someone how I managed to bump my ethernet cable while it was hookedinto the laptop. The stress screwed up the port so now my cable doesn't stay in and the port seems to have a short in it.

My question is, can this be replaced or is it just part of the mobo and the whole mobo has to be replaced? If I can just replaced the ethernet card, where do I get one and which one is compatible?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

    Cheers!

If you don't have anymore warrenty what i would do is get another Ethernet port from whatever board that has a similar port, desolder the old one and solder the new one on the board,it's pretty easy!
the short that you mentioned it's due to the contact "blades" touching eachother, don't try to plug a cable.

thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that doesn't sound easy! I have no idea where to even start to get a port that is similar...

You could look for a defective M17x motherboard on eBay.

can you see if any of the pins are damaged ?

If so, you can fix them

If you're trying to "fix" the port as said above be sure to use a plastic or a non conductive "tool"
And you can find a port on a ordinary Ethernet card!
Also if you're not comfortable with opening your system and solder another port, bring it to a computer shop or somebodycertified to do it
