Does anyone know how to stop alien respawn running at startup? My win 7 boot is quite slow on my 7200 rpm drive and suspect this is a major cause. Booting from off to usable windows is taking a little over 2 minutes even after a defrag of the drive. Even when I first got laptop it took similar, stays on welcome screen after login for a good 30 secs too!

Also do you think mcafee is another root cause of slow start up?

    Thanks,
    Wayne

Go to search in windows and type "msconfig".

Select the startup tab and disable programs you don't want to start up.

I think it may be listed under "Dell restore" or dell backup or something along those lines.

I use a program called Soluto. The program breaks down your entire boot record for you. I have a video on YouTube showing how it works. M17xR3 VS XPS17-702x.

Thanks mate. I watched your vid. I'm going to try soluto when my wife allows me 5 minutes to play with my machine! Does it log start up programs as soon as you login? My slow boot problem is mainly when I login, the welcome screen with blue circle stays in for about 30 secs. I want to find out what the machine is doing at this stage of the boot. Once the desktop appears then everything loads and becomes usable pretty quick. It's not the old solid wallpaper bug because I have a jpeg as my wallpaper. In the event log I can see total boot time is about 2 minutes approx. Maybe soluto will tell me what I already suspect - mcafee and respawn (which I can't figure how to prevent running at startup) are too blame!

Yes it breaks everything in the boot down program by program in order and gives you the amount of time on each program. Soluto can also help in removing. You have obviously tried MSconfig right?? I chose not to go w/ Mcafee or Norton on this machine. I'm using MSE. I seem to like it better than anything I've used in the past. If it makes you feel any better my boot times range anywhere from 2-2:31 sec on average. But I highly recommend installing Soluto. It takes just a few minutes & then your done. Have fun my friend.
