So i called up dell and they let me return my R3 even though its been like 30days. they are doing this on a case by case basis. i figured i might as well get one after the re-release and hopfully get a better card than the 460....i might also NOT get 3d this time....its a cool toy, but to be honest, i cant really play games on it without eyestrain.
Just figured i would let anyone know that is past the 21 day mark, you might still be able to return.
-
did you ask them if you'll be charged for a restocking fee or not?

nice. i returned mine after 14 days with the exact same thought - better GPU (6970m) and no 3D for better battery life.
-
...I'm guessing from your "better card than 460" statement that it miserably failed in terms of performance?
I've been trying to decide and it looks like I'll go 6970 if its offered... Though I REALLY want a 485. -
Just played the crisis 2 demo on highest settings and smooth as silk. Will try the dedicated 3D setting. I suspect most of the new games are going to have dedicated 3D modes.

Did they ask you for your reason for the return? If yes, what did you say? I may do the same and upgrade to 6970 as well.
TYIA! -

I'm returning mine soon. After calling in 7 times over the last week to ask for a return I was promised an email with return labels but nothing. Yesterday I let out an absolute do-do-storm on the phone and made myself VERY CLEAR with the Csr rep controlling the conversation from beginning to end and got the labels emailed and verified while on the phone and another 30 day window to send it back for all the headache.
Basically EVERY time I called I was stressed and asked why I was returning. I clearly stated there is a recall and a Dell statement on the Dell website stating I have the option to return. Now every time I called I entertained their offers which in my opinion gave them the excuse not to process the return. This last time I CLEARLY stated to the Csr that unless you are giving mr $1000 off cash this laptop is being returned. He mumbled a 'no sir that's not pos..' when I cut him off again and asked not to hear another offer from anyone ever again until I have my labels... Smooth sailing from then on in.
So now I have 30 days so I'm ordering my 17 mbp so I can do some side by side comparos to see if I really do love osx or if I'll be pocketing some cash and going with a 6970 r3 if available.
Bottom line is be firm. I was linked by batboy to the recall thread and I did read it I've very carefully and you will know exactly what your options are and all you have to do is put your foot down and it will happen! -
Are you speaking to Indian, Flip, or Costa Rican csrs? -
Every time I called so far it's been Indian. They tried every which way for me to keep it offering up to 550 cash off or 700 towards a next purchase. The idea of an m11x when the refresh occurs for $2-300 was tempting as well.
Few reasons why I had to return though.
1. Chipset. I will never take a repair over a new machine.
2. I still haven't used 3d since the day I got the machine.
3. I want the wireless streaming
4. I would much rather have the 6970
5. I wanted to get fewer options because I needlessly optioned this one(2820,bluray,120hz/3d,256ssd) which made this a $3500 machine. I have a ps3 and dl all my br rip movies. SSd I will swap myself after next gen release. Also 2820 isn't worth the premium over 2720 as I am such a casual user anyways (light gaming, browsing web watching movies)
6. Want to get red next time -
-
I like the black. i just feel the red adds a little more character to the machine. Black is subtle but in a lot of light its like a dark grey. I prefer the black anodized aluminum on the r2. When it comes to scratches on the rubber coating i think black will handle it better though as its black underneath.
