That shows 580m at 8% faster average.

I have the option of upgrading from the 6990M to the 580M for $59 (I have a $40 credit). Worth it?

Well from 6990M being the King of the Hill I guess now move on to bash Nvidia on the cost factor. Was this Nvidia's retailing price or Dell's. In Alienware current systems Nvidia is the only option to go for if you want compelling 3D performance unless you settle for 560m. So its a no brainer when choosing the GPU for 3D. However if you dont want 3D then AmD would be a good bargain I suppose. However Nvidia also knows their other implementations are of mature quality compared to Amd, including 3D delivery system. The have taken into consideration all these and hiked up the price.

Slash half the hefty tag....AMD will be deadweight.. at least 6990 will be.This will get interesting with further driver updates, overclocking, over volting etc..until these 2 companies drop another 2 whoppers on us all.

But aren't the 6990M and the 580M almost exactly on par with each in like 3D mark Vantage and other benchmarks at the stock clocks? From the benchmarks I've seen on the forum they have been very close, not nearly 8%?

6990 does support 3d i believe trought hdmi 1.4 if im correct but that means not using the build in screen.

tbh i find 3d more a gimmic then something usefull, most ppl get a headache from too much 3d gaming.

nvidia cards seem to pull better fps in a fair amount of games as their optimised for nvidia cards.

then again 8% diff for 300 bucks heh.

Although isnt the 580m better for overclocking ?

The 580m has the ability to be volt modded allowing it to be overclocked to desktop 560 Ti levels if you can keep the temps under 79C. A decent repaste with ICD24 and an elevated back (or cooler) would be a decent investment, which is what I intend to do with mine when it comes :)

In benchmarks they are neck and neck, but in actual gaming, the 580M GTX on average outperforms the 6990M by ~8%.
