Depends on if you only need the cable and power button. If you do, then yes, that is the correct part. Or do you need the main cable that connects the media bar to the motherboard? Here is the part number and price for that: FD86P - Indicator cover cable - 12.99 USD

Also, here's the link for a whole new media center cover: W779M | Refurbished Alienware M17x Center Control Covers

I could never really figure out what went bad on my old one so I spent the $30 ($20 for cover, $13 for cable) and just got a whole new getup. Now the top lights up and works without a hitch.

Forgive me for resurrecting this thread - but I am in dire need of this stupid cable (p/n fd86p). I noticed you say "Straight from Alienware." However, I call them and they tell me that they don't provide parts, and I'll have to contact a parts supplier. My question: Who has this part, where can I get it?

When answering, please keep in mind:
    - Impact doesn't have it
    - Parts-People doesn't have it
    - Ascentech doesn't have it.

    TIA

    - Jim

pchub usually has cheaper parts than partspeople, and shipping is free aswell, although it takes about 8-10 days for part to arrive :)

Right - it's an Alienware m17x-r2 and I'm looking for just the ribbon cable which connects from the power button control cover assembly to the mainboard (dell p/n fd86p).

    - Jim

Perhaps. I tried multiple versions of search strings, and got nothing back each time. Looks to me like their site doesn't work too well in that regard.

That's more like it - and looks quite promising. Thanks for the link.

    And the verdict.
    My replacement cable works.

Dont need to be 10 cm, could be apx 9 as the orginal, but i choose to go just a little longer.

Use this stringsearch in Ebay: 16PIN 10cm FFC RIBBON CABLE 0.5mm PITCH INVERTED

Works like a charm, and cheaper to.

SUCCESS!!!!! This ribbon cable was perfect. Thanks for your help. It appears that I don't know how to googles gooder because everytime I tried, I kept searching for either "fd86p" or "m17x-r2 cover cable" (or variations thereof) and would get nothing - or sites with "out of stock" - in return...

Yep, you can buy from eBay or Digikey.com. I bought a few spares from Digikey for like $8 shipped before I sold my M17x

These ribbon cable break so easily, same with the retainer clips on the hinge boards.

Noticed my M14x-R2 didn't have both, which is better as then they can't break.

Luckily there are usually a couple available on ebay if you search for m17x ribbon.
