For some reason the dos and the windows version of the firmware updater doesnt want to work on my m17x. I'm wondering if it could be because of the ssd that I have installed?

I wonder what it actually does... applying firmware patches to peripherals always worries me because it's impossible or much more difficult to undo, plus I perceive it to be less robust than system BIOS updates and there's the potential for the newer update to make things worse than better, like the A09 fiasco. Like A09, this Seagate update says it's for better SATA compatibility. I'm inclined to hold out or wait for someone else to be the guinea pig on this one.

right, my philosophy regarding bios updates usually is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

the fact that it's a "recommended" update and not a critical one, also combined with the patch notes "improve the read compatibility" suggests to me that this is probably one most users could skip over.

was read compatibility ever an issue in your laptop? i'm guessing this might be the case for some new hardware, but it works fine in the m17x afaik.

Only a tip: make a full backup of all your data before updating.
