    So,

My first post ever on this website, although I read a hell of a lot in here. I had this Alienware since 2008, with Vista Ultimate 64 installed on it.
I almost didn't use it, as I got an ASUS G73jh (a great machine).
But I recently had some problems with it (my bad, the machine was flawless). And I suddenly remembered about my lovely M17x, which I asked I guy to upgrade Windows to Windows 7. Once I was back, I had most stuff installed. Like drivers and . BUT. The drivers were for Windows Vista, and they were installed on Windows 7. I have nVidia 260m GTX SLI. When I turn my laptop on with discrete graphics enabled, I just get a black screen after the logon screen. Although I can see my mouse on the display. Then I disabled discrete graphics in the thingy F12 menu on startup. It worked perfectly well again. I WANT MY DISCRETE GRAPHICS BACK!
    Any ideas?

Just uninstall your video drivers and run CC cleaner or another app that makes sure all driver remnants are removed.

Reboot the system and then run the install of newly downloaded Nvidia drivers for Windows 7 64 and see if that fixes things.

How can I uninstall the drivers?
My system does not see the Duals, it sees the 9400m.
Also when I am on the F12 screen it says that the discrete graphics are supported on Vista only. Bull?

    Download CC Cleaner...

First download the new Nvidia driver for 260M Windows 7 version. Save which ever version would be for your copy of windows to your desktop.

64 Bit version: NVIDIA - Download Drivers M

32 Bit Version: NVIDIA - Download Drivers M

    Then download CC Cleaner.

CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Run CC Cleanerit and go to the tools options then scan down and find anything that says Nvidia and use the unistall option to remove them.

Once they are removed restart your computer... Everything will look HUGE... Once it boots up run the application that is the new Nvidia drivers you downloaded.

Let me know how it works

So did everything, it still runs 9400m after everything looked HUAUGE. The laptop does not react to the I/D GFX button (F7) anymore. ?
    any alternatives?
how else can I switch my graphics to discrete?
also is there a freeware which is alike to Driver Genius?
I guess my sli bridge or chipset drivers are messsed up.

yeah installing drivers for windows vista when you are running windows 7 has to have turned things into a mess....

Did you get a windows 7 disk or authentication code?

I am thinking a fresh install of Windows 7 after reformat and then downloading the appropriate Dell drivers for the M17X with windows 7 will be your best bet.

Don't think any talk of "cracks" is allowed here and I don't personally know of any as I buy all my OS copies from Newegg as system builders copies.

I have never used nor know what driver genius is so no help there :(

Assuming your M17X is a R1 below is the link for the windows 7 drivers for your system.

Who did the install of Windows 7? You or your friend?

Sounds like your system thinks it has 9400m video cards installed due to the drivers that are loaded... If you did a complete driver uninstall and reinstalled the drivers I told you about I don't know why it is still saying 9400m unless....

Your "friend" that loaded Windows 7 for you took your 260ms and put in some 9400m video cards... If so that was a pretty pricey reload of windows 7. He may have thought you would never know since you had your new Asus G73.

Man he is my uncle xD
But I am pretty sure the 260s are there)
The thing is that when I enable the discrete graphics in the startup menu, the laptops starts up and I can only see my mouse on a pitch black screen. I can move it as well. And in about 5 minutes I get the blue screen of death.
    Not good.
So I might reinstall Windows on Monday and get the drivers from your link only.
