I am a little confused on the whole issue with SSDs with the R2's so does anyone know what would be better? Would it depend on what SSD is used and how you tweak it etc....

Yes there are differences in SSD, bit like your RAM, some speeds and makes run better. SSD, is also a shed load fast than normal optical HDD's, if you run them in a RAID array, your machine will become lightening fast

I know SSDs are generally faster but theres a huge debate on how crappy they work in the R2 M17xs because of the Intel chipset.

My firend has one, as long as you have go tthe most uptodate firmware on it, i thinks t is pretty good and most issues have been rectified by intel

SSDs will still be much faster than any other hdd chiefs. There are many fixes however the main issue was just 4kb random read writes and a few other performance issues with SSDs in the M17x. They just aren't hitting max or full performance in some cases. However they are still running super fast compared to normal hdds. They would be tip top to use still.
Most of the issues aren't too hindering however we like to max things out and for things to perform at their very best so hence we are still waiting on the word from Dell engineers whether or not there is a bug fix or new driver update or something.

Best recommendation apart from RAID 0 of 2 SSDs would be to get a good SSD for the OS and then a large 2nd hdd ie. 500gb or more for storage space.

I've got my eyes on some SSDs as well and might think about striking in the near future as well oles.

    Cheers. :)

Thanks reborn! I am actually looking at getting 2x of the newer Samsung SSDs they look and perform sexy from what I have read. Since I will be only gaming 2x 64GB would work just fine in RAID 0 :)

Ah yup Awesomes!!!! The speed your gonna get from 2X SSD in RAID 0 is gonna be sUper :p seXy!!! ;) :D :D
Loading speeds for games and the OS are gonna be like     ehehehe oles!

I would do the same as you however I need quite a bit of storage space with all the constant dling I do. ;)

    Cheers. :)

Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Review. I was looking at this about an hour ago, actually. Even the XT's in RAID0 don't equal a single SSD. I think the best option right now is to nab the 160GB Intel for primary stuff, and a high capacity mechanical for storage. I have the 80GB, and it's too small in my opinion.
