If I just purchase a single HDD for my m17x then could I add a SSD later on? If so which one do you people recommend? What is the benefit of a SSD? Do I just load the OS and games on it?

Yes you can add it later. Somebody else has to recommend brands, all I know is that the second generation Intels are good. The benefit is everything loading faster due to better transfer speeds and no seek time (nothing moves and has to reach a certain point like on a mechanical hard drive). Definitely have the operating system installed on it. Ideally everything would be on it, but they're just too small at this point in time. So just any frequently used programs/games for the sake of space conservation.

The Intel X25 G2 is meant to be great its the one I would be getting when I get a laptop

ok. i checked the price and it is ridiculous.

If you do purchase a single HDD, don't forget to get the second harddrive kit immediately. Some of the single drive systems have been shipped without it and I doubt they would give it to you for free after a couple of months/year.

Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
that happened to me I called dell and they sent it out no problem fast too
I got a SSD through Dell with my M17x-R2 and its not too bad def not as good as the Intel or OCZ SSD's, but affordable compared to those for the size and performance still crushes 7200RPM drives

i got the Crucial M225 256gb ssd. you can pick up a brand new one on ebay for the same price of the Samsung PM800. The crucial is a little faster than the Samsung and it supports TRIM. Windows rating with samsung is 6.7 and Crucial is 7.3. Samsung transfer speeds are read: 220mb/s write: 170mb/s Crucial speeds are read: 250mb/s write: 200mb/s. price is around $500. I got mine for $450. no a lot of people bid on ssds so you might be the only bidder and get an ssd for a very nice price.
