Is this only compatible with the hard drives that came with the computer originally? Just curious so that I don't screw something up that would make me have to reinstall Windows for probably the 10th time this week...

On the M17x R3 Part Number List ( link) all the hard drives say "Use only Non-FFS as replacement, supports FFS circuit on MB". That leads me to believe that the free fall sensor is located on the motherboard so only normal hard drives without the sensor should be used. Just a guess so I could be wrong.

Added note to the clean install guide on being 'optional'.

Slick is not alone. Many choose not to install this simply because it has been overly sensitive in the past on some AW models.

To my knowledge, as long as your aftermarket drive supports it, then yes - it should function correctly with an aftermarket drive.

I also believe there is an option to perm disable it in the control panel. Check if you have it installed currently.
