Hello everyone.
I have been provided with 2(actually 3) options for the replacement of my 1645
1. XPS 15 with 3 yr extended warranty
2. AW 14 or AW 17 (well i am not sure which AW they would offer me but i guess its AW 14)
Refund is out of option as its a international warranty case. I am currently in India and my orignal laptop is from USA. (Can i convince them to give me refund for international case??)
Well I am not a hardcore gamer. I game occasionally only. So the XPS is good for me in that department.
The AW is heavy aswell. The XPS suits my needs well, the only the problem is build quality. My 1645 had better build quality as compared to XPS.
Also even with same config the AW is too costly as compared to XPS. So if I am able to sell it i would get good money. But here in India its not that easy to sell a Laptop.
I use the Laptop for coding, watching movies,VMware .... etc and occasional gaming like FIFA 11...
So which Laptop should i get, I am tilting towards XPS 15. I need your opinions. Why would AW be better than XPS in my case ??.
Also i am planning to sell either Laptop (AW for sure if i decide to go for it as i am no gamer) so any Indian buyers please pm me aswell.
So my question is what does Alienware offer to a non-gamer. What should i get.
My priorities are
Display
Portablity
Build Quality
Better Resale value (i.e if I find a buyer in India at the first place).
Also there is warranty issues to be considered.
On XPS i get 3 year compleate cover on AW i get 1 year. And i cant afford to extend AW's warranty with those upgrade price.

If you have the choice of those 3 options I would go with the M17x R3. None of the 3 are going to be metal tanks in build quality but I have an XPS 14 in my house and it's a good solid computer but no where near the performance level. The M14x is going to underperform compared to the 1645, the XPS 15 is just mehh IMO, the M17x is going to give you the best of all worlds especially if it's spec'd right. If you get a non-Nvidia config you're looking at 5-6 hours of battery life, amazing gaming, and although it's bigger it's light for a 17". Get back to us with the specs they're offering and it will make it easier to decide

Its the one you have with 460M + 3D.
Also as I have said i am not a gamer than if I go for AW 17 then i have buy that extended warranty worth 500$ myself which I cant afford. One thing that goes in Aw favor if i get the new Laptop and sell it. But selling a new Laptop in India is quite an ask. -

Well it's up to you then, without an AMD card the best battery life you're looking at is 3.5-4 hours tops. There's a big reason I'm switching my rig over to the AMD with switchable graphics. Tough choice there, would they be willing to order a US based rig for you and you could have it forwarded by a family member or friend?
-
Well they sort of asked me right at the beginning only if have have any plane to go to usa any time soon which i declined as neither me nor anyone know is returning to india anytime soon from usa.

Yeah but if you still have friends/family/etc in the USA you could have it shipped to a "home address" in the USA and have them ship it to you. If they'd offer you a 1080p/6970 R3 in the USA it would be worth it IMHO

I say XPS 15 with the rgb led screen. Its not as much as a gaming machine as the AW14 but it will handle most everything pretty nicely, plus you get an amazing screen, great speakers, and with that xps ya can upgrade to the blu ray burner. The build quality of the XPS 15 is below the AW14 imo, but its still solidly constructed. ( Also make sure its the new Sandy Bridge XPS, dont go for last years XPS 15, its not terrible, but better stuff in the current model. )

Just out of interest, what warranty do you have remaining on the XPS? - Dell should transfer the remaining balance over to your new system so if you have a fair bit left, you may not need or want to shell out more £££ on extending warranty if its gonna cost $500.....
Just a thought....(and I too would go R3 out of your options...FWIW) -
Just a note, I should have said r3 17 if they offer it to you, but if they offer the aw14, my personal recommendation is the xps15 with rbg led, if can't get hat screen, then go back to the aw14.
